NEC ND-3520A Problems!

I have burned a couple of DVD's no problem. No problem reading anything either. Now, anytime any of my DVD's are being read or when i am trying to burn a DVD i get the failures and the outter edge of the bottom of the DVD, about 2 cm worth of the DVD, is scratched all the way around, like the DVD is just spinning on something and ruining the outter part of the DVD. Is this an issue with the hardware? I am using Nero 6.6 and DVD Shrink. I tried using the Nero speed test deal and all it did was give me another scratched up coaster.

 

I have a NEC 3520 and have never experienced the problems you just described. Sounds like the burner is defective. If it is under warranty, check into sending it back.

 

This sounds like there is something physically wrong with that drive, not software related

One final thought: Did you flash your drive with a modified firmware?
If you did, try re-flashing back to original firmware.

 

No, I havn't changed the firmware at all. Acctually, i have no idea how to change the firmware...But, do you think this would have an effect on whether the drive scratches up DVD's or not? I was beginning to wonder if the drive may be out of balance but that doesnt explain why it worked two or three times before?

 

aeveatch: The original firmware on the NEC3520 has "riplock" on it that keeps the speed in reading and writing down to a slow speed. The modified firmware removes this restriction and allows it to read and even burn some media much faster.

I was thinking that if you used the modified firmware it was speeding up your burner too fast and throwing it off balance.

Either you got some bad media that are not balanced properly or your burner is mal-functioning and the latter seems more probable.

Father in law has the NEC-3520a and I upgraded his firmware to the latest OFFICIAL v3.04

To my surprised, it ripped a DVD-R I had at 12x

Man this is not 2x RIPLOCK

You know I never ripped much with my 3520A with its 3.04 firmware, only burned. But I don't remember it going to 12X; maybe somewhere around 3X. I used my Litey167T to rip. But I did upgrade to Liggy & Dees modified firmware 1.UG and its top listed feature was that it will remove "riplock" off of 3520.
If your father-in-law is getting 12X rips with official firmware 3.04 then that is great...

 

Where would i go to upgrade my firmware and is this advised? I RMA'd the burner so that i can get another one. I am using, DVD Clone, Nero, DVD shrink and DVD decripter. Would any of these programs change the firmware? Also, is there a better program out there for backing up my DVD's so they will fit on a 4.7gb disk? Thanks a lot guys/gals.

 

@cougar_ii I belive only dvd-5s can be read at something like 12x. I've ripped dvd-9s with 3.04 at about 3 or 4x, dvd-5s at about 10x. Do you know what dvd was ripped at 12x?

I would recommend flashing your new 3520 with the official version 3.04. It will add more media compatibility. Modified or Hacked firmware will void your warranty.

You have everything in your inventory to rip and burn all DVDs out there. Many purchase Any DVD for $39 which runs in the background and can be used with Shrink and Nero Recode to strip away the newer encryption codes. But I haven't found a DVD that DVD Decrypter couldn't rip.

I ripped a DVD5 (Already burned DVD-R) and was amazed to see 12x.

As stated above, it's my father in law's PC so I didn't try to RIP a DVD9 on it.

You sure picked my curiosity, guess what I'm gonna do when I get home

thanks for clarifying the ripping speed on the nec3520 for my edification. i just assumed it was riplocked for all discs.
Like I said I used my 3520 to burn only and my 167T to rip.

Ppower: you said in a post 3 or 4 days ago that "I'm using this 304bt_rpc1.exe". Have you tried the L&D v1.UG? Just wondering what the difference may be.

 

Ya know I haven't tried L&D v1.UG. This one doesn't support bit setting does it?

 

Yes it does and it removes the riplock also.

Ok when you guys rip a dvd-9 with L&D v1.UG what rip speeds do you get?. With 304bt_rpc1 I can get to about 7.6x, a dvd-9 18-20 minutes

okay, I ripped a DVD-9 movie, Phantom of the Open, with DVD Decrypter in ISO mode with my 3520 at it ripped it in 16:40 with an average of 5x and the Max of 7.1X. I then ripped it the same way with my Litey 167T and it ripped it in 15:10 with an average of 5.6X and a maximum of 7.7X.

If your firmware can rip in 7.6 average, then you're faster than my Litey..

But I still plan to use my 167T for ripping and the 3520 for burning.

 

I'm sorry I wasn't clear, when I say can get up to 7.6x thats max, average is usually somewhere around 5.2-5.5x. So it's about the same
