I recently purchased a NEC 3520 OEM from Tiger Direct. They tell me the firmware is able to be upgraded or flashed. Is an OEM unit able to be upgraded? The unit seems slow on copying, but much faster at writing. I am using DVD-Rs as my media. Anyone experiencing the same thing? I have only installed it about a week ago.

John, I have the same burner except I got it from Newegg and it had the 1.04 firmware in it. I initially upgraded to the latest official firmware found in first link below. It basically just adds more media compatibility. But it is NEC's "official" firmware.

Later I changed firmware to Liggy and Dees 1.UG found in link below. It allowed some major improvements like removing the riplock (which is why your reading is slower) and giving bitsetting capability. The ability to change +R format to DVD-ROM format. Modified firmware has the disadvantage of voiding your warranty.
