Hi, I'm looking for a good all around encoding program. I should be able to encode MP3s, LAME, OGG, etc. at different bitrates. I do not judge if a program is a trial or free, if it's good enough, I will buy it. Give me all of your opinons. PS, I prefer skinny and "to the point" programs, I don't need it to burn or rip movies or any other thing.
dBPowerAMP should suit your needs perfectly. Its free, google for it and you should find it easily. Also notice on their webpage the many plugins you can download for it so you can encode many different formats
MP3 is now positively stone-age. Visit http://smartencode.beplaced.com/. There is a new encoder there which has rips CDs with the best quality i've seen so far.
Really does look like MP3 is taking a bettering now that new formats have been introduced. I encoded some albums to MPC using EAC and the quality of the files was excellent, took up less space than if I had converted to MP3 and took half the time to encode an entire cd. I wish Apple would make a colour iPod mini then I would have a reason to encode to AAC/MP4 using iTunes.
So, weazel200, you liked the MPC with EAC combo (I told ya it was awsome)? No matter what, Mp3 will always be the status quo. No other format can claim its fame, or absorbtion in to our everday music lives. Just about every DVD player (including portables), all portable digital music players, and most portable CD players support it. It created the digital music era (MIDI doesn't count!). Mp3 is old but very vital. --- You have to understand that Mp3 is over 10 years old, but the other formats arn't that young either. Ogg Vorbis had its chance. Wma never had a chance. MPC is stuck in "audiophile" limbo. Mp4 is the clear winner except for its owned by Apple. The two things that I see killing Mp3 are the increase in harddrive space (for the money) and faster internet speeds. When every body has Tera-Byte hard drives and are doing buisness on "Internet 2" with its fiber optic everyting, I think people will opt for high-fidelity Lossless formats instead of low quality lossy audio. I remember reading that article last year and was completely gobsmacked. Do you know when Internet 2 will be available?
2007 (maybe). But I don't think the general public will be using it anytime soon. Too many porn sites, spammers, and viruses on the first internet is part of the reason a 2nd one is needed (also the telephone wire in older homes just isn't suitable for high speed connections)! Its being developed now so its hard to say for sure. But I hope they hurry up. Ced
to have have small file and great quality check out this guide for ripping cd to mp3 using EAC http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/mydeneaclame.cfm i've ripped about 10 of my cd's using it and they files are all under 5 meg and the quality of most of them is 100% i get the odd mp3 that is only 99.9 but who is going to notice 0.1% I'd like say thanks to the makers of this software and the person who wrote the guide.
since Feb 2003 I think, but the first year I only posted a handful of times. Only in the past year have I been coming here everyday...this place is more addicting than crack! j/k
