After reading the articles on the forum, especially docTY's ive started using Taiyo Yuden media. Bought a 100 of the 8x DVD+R printables from http://www.svp.co.uk (superb site by the way, very competitive pricing, and super fast shipping!) Thing is, im not to happy with the quality of burns im getting, and since im using genuine ty's (thanks to docTY's guide on taiyo yudens), it has to be the burner. I have a toshiba laptop which has a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ840S. So, which burner would u guys recommend? among features, it has to be able to booktype. lightscribe capability is not essential, but if its there its an added bonus. And since im gonna be using it in an external usb casing, are there any additional precautions i need to take to ensure good quality burns? Thx
Brands to look at: -NEC -LiteOn -Plextor -Pioneer -LG Extras to look for: -Bitsetting/Booktyping (Essential!) -Lightscribe (Optional) As for specific drives, I will reccomend three... The: -Pioneer 111D - Has ALL the features you need, and v good brand too! Get it here -LiteOn18A1P - Have all the features (as above). Get it here -LiteOnSHM-165H6S - **As above** Get it here Don't cheap out on your enclosure!! A bad enclosure can kill your drive and burns! Also, use a USB 2.0 port (highest speed - you should have it) or FireWire (if available). Get back to me.
@Ripper About the Pioneer 111D. I heard this Booktypes DVD+R DL automatically yet doesn't do it for +Rs. Is this true? And if it is is there a third party software that can booktype +Rs to DVD-ROM? My BenQ 1620 finally gave out on me and I need a new drive =(
@haza12d I don't think the Pioneer booktypes at all unless you find some patched firmware for it. The NEC now w/ stock firmware only booktypes +R DL media. Patched firmware is easy to find for it to do bookptyping on +R media but will void any warranty. LiteOn & Plextor booktype right out of the box. LG has alot of models that due too.
I can't seem to find the patched firmware for the 111D for booktyping so I'll guess I'll have to pick one of the LiteOns. Their price isn't bad either. So those LiteOns listed above booktype without additional firmware?
I think the bitsetting was fixed with 111D, whereas not avialable in 111? Could be wrong though Anyway, LiteOns a v good drive IMO.
@haza12d Yes the LiteOn's have the booktyping option. No need to find patched firmware. They are great drives too! @ripper Can't find the booktyping option listed for the 111D. The newer NEC's have it for dual layer but I think Pioneer's still don't have it. I could be wrong though too
@ Binkie, you are right, no support, but hacked firmware is out, and works v well. I must have gotten confused there ;-)
I almost said malt teaser instead of blonde! Of course I take the cake for yesterday's idiotic post :0)
