Hi and first of all is there a +/- sign to collapse the forum section? I think this forum should implement that feature because it'll make it easier to navigate since some people might not want read some sections at all. Especially if there're heaps of subforums. Anyway i got 2 problems. I want to burn a 700mb .avi file onto a single 700mb CD. I have searched many guides/tuts on Google and don't find what i need. I tried using Nero 8 and try to make a VCD of it, after 40 mins of encoding Nero changed the 700mb into a 1GB file. I understand how that happened, that's because .avi file is supposed to be compressed, just like .mp3. So after changing to the VCD format, it's larger. But i just want to burn the 700mb file as it is onto a 700mb disc. Is this possible without too much of a hassle? I know i can split the 700mb .avi file into 2 parts using AVI Splitter, and then burn them separately onto two 700mb CDs, but that's going to waste more time for me and i would much like it better to just burn it straight on a CD. I don't wish to waste a DVD just for a 700mb movie. I know heaps of ways to burn it to DVD, and i have used heaps of tools before. But i don't want that. I think it's too much of a waste for a DVD, sure i can use programs like DVD Flick, DVD Santa, DVD FAB Platinum, ConvertX to DVD etc, there're HEAPS of those tools i can use and i've used hundreds of them before. But i don't wish to convert a 700mb file to a DVD format, because it's just making the file larger and wasting a DVD and also wasting more time. So anyway, i don't wish to waste my DVDs on a 700mb movie, i need the DVDs for other things more important than this. I just want to burn the 700mb file as it is without making it larger or anything. And imagine people who doesn't have a DVD writer, they can't do it this way then, so PLEASE DON'T SUGGEST anything related to what i just said. Please RECOMMEND "ANY" tool that will do the job, whether it's freeware or shareware. I have my own ways of getting the shareware programs for free. Now, i know it's getting a bit annoying and pretty long already but here's my 2nd question. Is there any tool that can convert/comrpess a 4.7GB DVD movie into a 700mb file? I've found a few guides on Google but those take too many steps as well as using 3 programs and A LOT of time just to do this. I just need a simple program that does everything for me. I don't want to manually configure the encoding settings etc, there're some burning softwares that makes u do all this work and that's just plain annoying and waste of time.
umm, i never liked using the built in Windows CD burner, it's crap. As for Imgburn, i thought it's for burning .iso files?? Which is totally unrelated to what i asked. I have used Imgburn before and i use it heaps to burn PS2 games, so i'm pretty sure it's not used for this type of situation i'm having problem with, i may be wrong though so please guide me through if it's different to what i think.
Does your dvd player have the capability of playing AVI files? If it is does using nero to burn the AVI file as a "data" cd didn't work?, That's how I burn my AVI's to play on my dvd player (my dvd player is capable of playing AVI's.) If your dvd player is not capable of playing AVI (divx/xvid), then this will never work for you. If it can play VCD's, then it will have to be 2 cd's because of the mpeg1 bitrate. You can use the free "fairuse wizard" to convert a dvd to a 700mb AVI file.
I know that you can burn files/folders with ImgBurn. That being said I am not familiar at all with AVI files, so if this will not work I apologize.
thanks, i'm not sure if my DVD player can play .avi files, is there a way to check without actually burning the file onto a disc and then test it? Like, is there something you can look for on your DVD player to know if it plays .avi? And about the Fairuse Wizard, is it a program or is it a feature of some program? and ferguj1, thanks for your help on the Imgburn but it won't work. Imgburn is only useful for burning .iso files or data files. What i want to do is to burn my 700mb file on a disc so that i can view it on my DVD player, i.e i want to watch it on my TV. If you just burn the 700mb file as a "data file" on a disc, it won't play it on your DVD Player unless it supports .avi file. That's a new feature that only new DVD players now days will have. But most people won't have a good DVD player like that, and i don't think mine has it. Anyway, a data file can be played on a computer but not on most DVD players.
Sorry about that, I knew that I had used it to burn data to a CD before. I guess I didn't quiet understand what you were trying to do. Thanks for the explanation though, learn something new everyday.
I used to burn whole movies to CD a few years back. Don't do it anymore, because I use a Divx-playing dvd player and DVD-RW - problem solved. But the way I did it was to use the free version of Tmpgenc 2.5 along with the KVCD templates which you can find on the web somewhere. KVCD manages it by using VBR mpeg1. The reason you went from 700MB to 1 GB is because regular VCD is a fixed bitrate and the size depends on the length (in minutes) of the movie, nothing else. 1GB corresponds to 100 mins approx. Videohelp.com contains info on DVD players. You can look yours up and see what it's capable of.
ok thx guys. I guess i should go buy a dvd player that supports .avi then. But does the .avi file have to be Divx? Are there DVD players that can play any .avi file? Can someone tell me a good site to browse them or tell me how much they cost average? Like in USD or NZD, thx.
