Ok i dont really understand all this burnin stuff completely but i actually managed to burn off a copy of the movie monster in law. I used DVD shrink with Any DVD running and burned it with nero with no problem. After doing that movie I went through the same process with Sin City and Guess Who, and upon starting to burn it failed at 1 percent. I then tried to use DVDFab Decrypter, DVD Shrink and then Nero... same thing. I was so happy when I burned Monster in Law that I figured out how to do it that I went out and bought like a 50 pack of DVD+rs and now i have wasted 4 of them tryin to copy these other two. Nero fails with I believe a power calibration error. I dont understand how it copied one but not the others. Same process, same media, Maxell DVD + r, Could someone help me out. I really wanna be able to do this flawlessly with each attempt. U have no idea how long ive been tryin to be able to burn dvds and i finally get one to work and then it goes right back to hell its real discouraging. lol. jerry
hi was the first disc the same batch as the pack you bought? use dvd indentifier or dvdinfo pro to tell us the both dye types from the disc! could update firmware for drive for better reading of discs... also check DMA in device manager it may have gone to PIO dues to errors
Make sure your f/w is up to date. What make and model dvdrw and what is the current f/w? A nero log would be helpful too. C:/program files/ahead/nero/nerohistory. Copy and paste latest log removing the serial no. (starts with 1A20 or 1A21 usually). Mort

Other than "Bigfatboy" had mentioned, I didn't see the log stated any blank media's id code and its manufacture. So what's the blank media you're using to do your back up? This looks like Roxio to me. Roxio and Nero don't get along well, sometimes it will conflict Nero and causes you to have a bad/failed burned. If it's ROXIO, I suggest you to uninstall it completedly from your computer, reboot your computer and burn it again with Nero. NOTE: keep in mind to always back up with high quality media such as Taiyo Yuden (including both FUJI & SONY "Made In Japan"), Maxell "Made In Japan", and Verbatim only if you value your back up as much as the original.
Your drive is an oem ricoh and should support booktyping to dvd-rom. Run a disc through dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and tell us the manufacturer and ID. What speed are you burning at? 4x is recommended. Mort
ok this is what i have tried so far, i got the upgraded nero, i uninstalled roxio, restarted all that good stuff. im not even sure about how to upgrade my firmware but honestly will that make much of a difference? the disks are maxell dvd+r and yes i burned monster in law off of them so i dont think its the whole batch. its just really erking me that i could burn one movie and then afterwords i couldnt burn another one. the file sizes on the ones i am trying to burn now are the same exact as monster in law so i dont think its the file size. here again is my latest nero file... any more ideas or can someone explain to me how to upgrade the firmware and what exactly good it will do Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 10/26/2004 6:35:34 PM Nero Version: 6.6.0.16 Internal Version: 6, 6, 0, 16b Recorder: <HP DVD Writer 200j> Version: 1.36 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.6.0.16 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: <HP DVD Writer 200j >Version: 1.36 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.6.0.16 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 1 === Scsi-Device-Map === DiskPeripheral : ST380020A atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : HP DVD Writer 200j atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On === CDRom-Device-Map === HP DVD Writer 200j D: CDRom0 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: WriteBufferSize: 83886080 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 767MB (785904kB) Free physical memory: 434MB (445252kB) Memory in use : 43 Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 4.9.2005 UDF/ISO compilation 1:28:42 PM #1 Phase 112 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 DVD-Video files reallocation started 1:28:42 PM #2 Phase 114 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 DVD-Video files reallocation completed (no file modified) 1:28:42 PM #3 Text 0 File Isodoc.cpp, Line 6356 UDF document burn settings ------------------------------------------ Determine maximum speed : FALSE Simulate : FALSE Write : TRUE Finalize CD : TRUE Multisession : FALSE Burning mode : DAO Mode : 1 UDF Mode : UDF/ISO bridge UDF Revision : 1.02 UDF Partition Type : physical ISO Level : 1 (Max. of 11 = 8 + 3 char) Character set : ISO 9660 Joliet :FALSE Allow pathdepth more than 8 directories : TRUE Allow more than 255 characters in path : TRUE Write ISO9660 ;1 file extensions : TRUE 1:28:42 PM #4 Phase 111 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1832 DVD-Video files sorted 1:28:43 PM #5 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 127 Reader running 1:28:43 PM #6 Text 0 File Writer.cpp, Line 122 Writer HP DVD Writer 200j running 1:28:43 PM #7 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3309 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 1:28:44 PM #8 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3309 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 1:28:44 PM #9 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3233 Turn on Disc-At-Once, using DVD media 1:28:45 PM #10 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 270 Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB) Last address to be written: 2286175 (508:02.25, 4465MB) 1:28:45 PM #11 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 282 Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD) 1:28:45 PM #12 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2483 Recorder: HP DVD Writer 200j, Media type: DVD+R 1:28:45 PM #13 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 448 >>> Protocol of DlgWaitCD activities: <<< ========================================= 1:28:45 PM #14 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 838 Setup items (after recorder preparation) 0: TRM_DATA_MODE1 () 2 indices, index0 (150) not provided original disc pos #0 + 2286176 (2286176) = #2286176/508:2.26 relocatable, disc pos for caching/writing not required/ required, no patch infos -> TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048, config 0, wanted index0 0 blocks, length 2286176 blocks [HP DVD Writer 200j] -------------------------------------------------------------- 1:28:45 PM #15 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1051 Prepare recorder [HP DVD Writer 200j] for write in CUE-sheet-DAO DAO infos: ========== MCN: "" TOCType: 0x00; hi ok dump nero and make/set dvd shrink to output as iso / burn with dvd decrypter... set dvd shrink output size to 4300 just in case too! see what happens or even output as iso and not burn and use dvd decrypter s booktype feature if your drive and dvd decrypter can use this feature to get +R to dvd-rom like -R format
I check at the RPC1 forum for your dvd writer and I could not find one with HP DVD Writer 200j, but was able to find one with 200i/e - and its latest firmware version is 1.72. Go here and check it out for yourself http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=37 - be very careful though if it's not your dvd writer. However, I still think you need to update your writer's firmware so it will be more compatible with other blank media. For some odd reason, your HP writer did not detect your blank media. I look at the log and could not find the Maxell DVD+R and its code. Again, you're writing too close to the DVD+R's edge. You really should have Nero set (custom) it to 4350MB or 4400MB only. In addition, you can try to burn a little higher like 4X or 6X. I've used the Maxell DVD+R "Made In Japan" to back up all my dvd movies at 8X and they're all backed up flawlessly.
my dvd burner is kinda old.... i believe we got it in 2003 so i dont think it writes at speeds that high. also how do i set the output size on dvd shrink and on nero. or should i use nero... dvd burning is so confusing, i can burn the hell out of a cd this is ridiculous. isnt there a program out that you just can copy somethin without doin all the shrinking and all that crap? maybe does it all in one with one click wouldnt that be nice lol/ and i have no idea how to upgrade my firmware. my dvd burner is a 200i not a 200 j or at least thats what it says on the actual drive, but im gettin real tired of wasting dvd after dvd. ive already screw up 7 of them tryin to get this shit to work lol
also i tried upgrading the firmware but it said i needed HP Record Now so i downloaded it and installed it. then it said i needed the original software disk to install MYDVD which of course I dont have. I found a copy of My DVD though so im downloading it now. Is tehre an easier way to install the firmware this is getting ridiculous
Seriously, both DVD Shrink and Nero are great. However, I, on the other hand, prefer Nero to do the burning. But the choice is yours. In reality, it doesn't matter because you've had DVD Shrink to do the encoding/compressing already, then just burn/back up the movie using Nero that's basically. To change the size on DVD Shrink, so it won't be too close to the edge, try to do these very few steps. On DVD Shrink, go to "Edit", "Preferences", arrow down to "Custom" and set the size to 4400MB, then click OK. If it's 200i, then the latest firmware is 1.72 -- http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=37 may be you really need to update it's firmware, so it'll be more compatible with other blank media and so it might help to bump up your burning speeds as well as performances. Basically, all you need to do is click on the firmware's version i.e. 1.72 and it should automatically download into your computer. Once you're completed with the firmware downloading, just click on it and it should run and detects your dvd burner. NOTE: read the "readme" notepad before upgrading the firmware if you can.
ok so now i have upgraded to the newest version of nero, updated the firmware on my dvd writer from 1.36 to 1.72, uninstalled roxios easy cd creator, and i went into dvd shrink and set the compression to 4400. hopefully it will work now. i am encoding my files to compress them smaller now as we speak, so i hope this all will work, if not i will post the nero log again and maybe u all can tell me what i should try next
just wanted to take a min to thank all of those who helped me with this. i got guess who to burn and sin city is about 90 percent as im typing this. u guys really know somethin about what your talkin about and im glad i came here for help. hopefully i wont have to many problems in the future. everyone have a great day
@SharkBit, I'm glad that you're making good progress afterall. Well, let us know what happen on the result alright. Now, just remember to "always" back up your dvd movies on high quality media such as the famous Taiyo Yuden (including both FUJI & SONY "Made In Japan"), Maxell "Made In Japan" and Verbatim only.
