No need to convert if you just want to burn to DVD. If you meant convert to DVD video, then try TMPGEnc, it should be able to convert the mkv directly via dshow. I believe it only works with Gabest's splitter though so it won't work for all mkv's. As for avi, it is possible that the mkv already contains compatible streams, in which case you can just remux.
