ok i want as much input as possible so everyone please reply i am torn between the amd athlon 64 3800 or the 4000 the 3800 is like 100 bucks cheaper than the 4000 but what i am wondering is will i notice a difference between these two this pc will be used for gaming lots of web surfing and downloading but im building it to game with my specs so far are Kingwin KT 424 BK case Asus A8N Sli deluxe Ultra X connect 500Watt PSU 1G corsair Valueselect DDR 400 PC 3200 Thermaltake Venus 12 cpu fan WD 160G sata2 hdd sony dvdrom drive and im lookin into buying a 128 6600gt oc vidcard maybee 2 if im lucky
i would save the money and go for the 3800. I have a 3800 in my pc and just about every game i play the limiting factor is not the cpu but the graphics card. If you are only getting the 1 card then i would definately go for the 3800 unless you plan on getting a newer card in the near future. but if you plan on having 2 cards in 1 system then i am not qualified to answer the question as i have never had the pleasure of benchmarking an sli setup so you may possibly notice quite a large fps gain between the 3800 and 4000 in this case.
The two chips are running at 2.4mghz with the differece between the two processors being the size of the level two cache (512KB on the 3800 and 1mg on the 4000). You arent going to see a huge differnce with things like web surfing or downloading, you may find a samll improvment in gamming performance but as the current graphics cards deal with alot of processing the quality of the graphics card you go with will be more noticible. My advice would be save the hundred $ and maybe put that towards the other graphics card your after. cheers haim ps im running the 3800 and had the same debate with meslef before i got it, ended up putting extra cash towards a better graphics cards too, geforce 6800 256mb
I'm also running the 3800 with a 6800gt and It's fast, very fast. I came from a 3.0 ghz pentium 4 and the 3800 runs cooler, faster, and games run a whole lot better than they did with same card in the p4 box, I'd say get the 3800 and a 6800gt with that extra 100 bucks. p.s. get the venice core as it runs a whole lot cooler than the newcastle and can easily overclock to 4000 speeds.
