ok heres whats going on i just got a new 160 hard drive and the space on the drive is showing up as 149.05gb. why i'm i not getting the whole 160. o by the way the 160 gig is my second hdd. my first one is has windowsxp on it. can i even get the whole 160 for the second hard drive? thanks
It is completely normal, 160gb is actually 160,031,014,912bytes, they tell you it in bytes rather than gigabytes. There's nothing you can do about it it's like this with every hard drive in the world, there pretty much lying.
You cant get all 160, even though 150 seems kind of low. Think about this, a 4.7 GB DVD holds 4.3 gb of information/video.
you've got the entire 160g as you haven't lost anything. i have a 160g partitioned into 2, a 40g & 120g. the properties show the 40g as 37.2gb or 40,006,156,288 bytes. the 120g shows as 111g or 119,993,925,632 bytes. total is 148g or 160,000,081,920 bytes.

Hes right. All drives are off in how much they hold...plus if you punched it up on partion magic....it might show some unnallocated space in the front of the partition. Something like 700 megs or so. That is normal too. Why that happens I cant figure out, but I usually format the missing space and merge both partitions. But the biggest thing is a manufactorer always consider a gig or whatnot lower than what it is. I im assuming a way to legally rip peeople. Dvds are the same way. A gig hold 4.7, but most dvds you cant burn beyond 4300. See what I mean? Just like when I worked a gas station when I was 16...first job. The boss had the machine set to disperse a 3/4 gallons of gas, but the machine said a gallon. So people was none the wiser. Everybody including everybody is always looking for a way to rip you the min you bend...lol Trust me their is nothing wrong with the drive. I have a 5 yr old webtv plus seagate which is supposed to hold a gig. Why webtv had it in there I dont know. I have windows 98 on it and use it for testing. That is even off. Its not a true gig and there is no unallocated space.
