hi, im new to working on video files, im looking to make a big batch of divx files into an mpeg format that play on dvd players, the catch is...im trying to make them well compressed, i've fooled with a few one click converstion tools but they never seem to compress the files worth a damn, files that were maybe 100 megs in divx come out to near or over a gig most times in the output mpeg file, what are some good progs and guides for this sort've thing? i've tried easy x converter i think it was called and vdub and no#1 video converter with little luck so far, im thinking vdub might work but im not sure what settings to use to have optimal quality and a good compression at the same time, im pretty computer literate but none of these progs seem to work, and i know its possible to do given that i've seen quite a few files on the web that were authored well and achieve maybe 220ish megs on an mpeg within the same ratio i mentioned prior (maybe 130-50 divx), if you know of any progs or even what some good codec formats to try would be plz post! =)

any help with this stuff would be greatly appreciated, thanks

divx is already compressed. Going to mpeg isn't going to make them smaller. What you're doing is converting the divx into DVD compliant files.

There are a number of programs that can be used:

    VSO's ConvertXtoDVD: http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
    DVD Copy 4 Platinum: http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopy_Profile.jsp
    TMPGEnc Express 3: http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te3xp.html
    DVD Santa: http://www.dvdsanta.com/
    The Film Machine: http://members.home.nl/thefilmmachine/
    NeroVision: http://ww2.nero.com/enu/index.html

All of the above are free or have fully functioning free trial except ConvertXtoDVD which watermarks the output in the free trial.

A lot of people are very partial to ConvertXtoDVD however.

Most of the programs allow you to set the max file size for the output and then take that into account when converting. They also allow setting the quality. Here's a ConvertX guide:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/vso_convertxtodvd_guide.cfm

There are guides for some of the others as well. Just click the Guides tab at the top of the page.

The more you try to put on a single disk, the lower the quality will have to become in order to contain the content on the disk. divx already has suffered a quality loss by being in divx format. Going back the other direction isn't going to increase quality.

funny, i was just trying the tmp encoder, it seems to do the trick, i wasnt necessarily looking for a better compression as thats nearly if not completely impossible from a div or xvid but i was looking for better at least from what i'd managed to output thus far, i just encoded one with tmp, didnt take to long and came out to just about what i was shootin for, thanks alot for the reply, is mpeg 1 usually compatible with most dvd players?

one other thing, how often would you say mp2 audio is compatible on dvd players or mp3 for that matter? is it a commonly supported standard type thing or is it a specialized type thing like how some players are playing divx these days? i have few discs, i dont wanna waste em if i can avoid it =)...thanks

Afaik, the DVD standard is up to 8 audio tracks containing Dolby Digital AC3, DTS, PCM (uncompressed audio) or MPEG1 Layer2 (mp2). Every player has to support these formats. It seems like most of the new ones also support mp3 CDs. I'm not sure exactly what you were asking so I hope this answers your question.

The standardized formats are PCM, including LPCM, MP2, AC3, and DTS. In NTSC countries at least one of the DVD soundtracks has to be either AC3 or PCM. The other formats can be optionally included. All NTSC players have to be able to decode AC3 and PCM, the others are optional. DTS appears on quite a few NTSC DVDs as well as most players.

MP2 is used primarily in Europe and I think all PAL players have to be able to decode AC3, PCM, and MP2.

AC3 is the dominant format for both PAL and NTSC countries.

This I know absolutely nothing about. I know there are filters but I've never used them and know nothing about them. Sorry. Maybe someone else will pass by and be able to help you out.
