NEED HELP ON ERROR MESSAGE!!!!

Can someone please help me on some crazy error message popping up and freezing computer. Its a friends computer running XP Pro new installation. He went online, everything running great and every so often the message states.... "registry files corrupted" etc. etc. Then tries to direct him to a website. Possibly spyware, who knows.. But it freezes everything else on the computer. Any ideas on how to get rid of this without reinstalling windows?

run ccleaner, spybot s&d, ad-aware, a registry cleaner (i recommend Registry Mechanic), and your anti-virus, all updated first. we can go from there. sounds like typical spyware.

try to run it in safe mode, as well. should prove a bit more stable for troubleshooting purposes.
