need help picking which cpu is faster!!

hi, ok i am having a dilemma wheather i should get amd athlon x2 4000 or intel core duo 2 at 2.2 GHZ please which one is faster or powerful.

 

Go with the C2D. It can overclock way more than the athlon, but dont forget that you need a certain motherboard for the intel processor than the Athlon.

 

oh so intel core duo 2 is faster? i am not talking about overclocking because i have no intention of overclocking my processor. but which one will be faster excluding the overclocking feature.

 

Well the athlon runs at 2.1Ghz, the C2D at 2.2, so it's a small advantage for the C2D...

You heard wrong. The Core 2 Duo at 2.2Ghz is about 50% faster than the Athlon 4000+ at pretty much anything, games included.

 

that was back in the old days of the pentium 4 that athlons dominated intel. not anymore.

Why don't you want to overclock? It's not like it's gonna kill your CPU. Everyone around here does it.

 

I have a coreduo 6300 1.8ghz (paid 189.00 with m/b) and also a amd x2 4800 2.4 ghz (paid 119.00 with m/b). Both will play any game you though at them, for games it's all about the video card). For divx video encoding the amd is actually faster in my tests (even though in reviews the coreduo 6300 is said to compete with the amd x2 5600). In defragging and backing up hard drives with true image, both are quick no noticable difference. At idle my coreduo 6300 cpu temp is 39C, the amd x2 4800 is 42C. In comparism my semprom 2800 cpu was 59C at idle.

I don't overclock, both cpu's are plenty fast as is. I would not hesitate to buy another AMD x2 cpu. I think if you need more speed for games, a higher end video card will always be more important than a faster cpu.

 

The difference is of course, the 6300 is at the bottom end of the Core 2 Duo series, the 4800+ is in the middle of the X2 range. The 6300 competes with the 4400+ really, so the 4800 should beat it. What you have to consider though, is that an E6750 will compete with a 3.2Ghz Athlon, and it's not exactly expensive.

 

I don't about you but getting extra performance for free is really nice.

 

Indeed, and if I can tip the balance on that one:
X2 4800+ typical overclock on air cooling: 20% (2.4 -> 2.9Ghz)
E6400 typical overclock on air cooling: 60% (2.13 -> 3.4Ghz)
E6750 typical overclock on air cooling: 70% (2.66 -> 4.0Ghz)
Now factor in that a 1.86Ghz Core 2 Duo is as fast as a 2.2Ghz Athlon.
