I have (2) Seagate external drives. (1) is a 400g, (1) is a 500g (FreeAgent). I rip my dvds to my computer (C drive) and play them with Windows Media Player. When I transfer them to my Seagate 400g drive, I have no problem playing them with Media Player. However, when I move the dvds to the Seagate FreeAgent 500g drive, I can't play them with Media Player. Media Player opens, and in the left-hand bottom corner of Media Player it keeps flashin "N" then "playlist" over and over. Does anyone know how to remedy this situation? Both drives are Seagate so shouldn't play-back be ok on both? Do I need some kind of driver or something for my Seagate FreeAganet drive? Please help.
Yeah you should be able to run them on either as xp supplies driver for both. when you transfered the dvds from the 400gb to the freeagent there could have been a corruption somewhere during it. Best thing is to transfer one of the dvds from the freeagent hd that wont play, to the 400gb and then try playing it, if it comes accross as same problem then its gotta be the file itself thats the problem. If it works then you may need to do some tests on the hard drive such as defragging and chkdsk.
Does it matter if one drive is an NTFS and the other a FAT32? My "C" drive is a NTFS and all of the files play flawlessly on it.
Not really but ntfs is far bar the better of the two. it can recover from errors more redily and as its creates logs then it can automatically file system repairs. Did you give the above a try?
Yes, I did try the above. When I transfer the file from my FreAgent (NTFS) to my Segate (FAT32) or C drive(NTFS), it plays no problem. It's just on the FreeAgent that presents a problem. The FreeAgent is only 3 days old. Could it be the drive itself?
You Should Just make a Folder on your Freeagent drive and just rip your DVDs str8 to that.Doesnt matter how many Harddrives you have,you can choose anyone to rip the dvd to too.So no more transfering dvd files.just rip it str8 to the drive.Then download VLC media player,best Media player today will play anything.
Yeah tis good idea, or you could take all the data from the freeagent to the seagate and then reformat it via the fat32 file to see if then it will play them dvds,you can always change back file system afterwards.
Thank you for pointing me towards the VLC media player. I have been able to watch the dvds/video. However, I noticed I am unable to watch them continuosly like the original dvd. I have to open each file in the folder. Is there a way to watch them through VLC just like the dvd with menu options and all? I ripped them in their original state, menus and all. Is there a "user guide" to VLC that I can read to figure out how I need to configure it? Thank you for all of your help.
Yea,Open VLC media player,then open directory,Then just select the folder.Dont open files ,select Open Directory. Hope tha helps.
