I have a friend who wishes to install windows 98, don't ask why I don't know, on a hard drive from another PC. Apparently the hard drive belonged to HP PC and when he tries to install windows 98 it tells him that its a HP hard drive and does not allow him to install windows. I believe the hard drive is not in a HP PC. Is there a solution to this or is there no hope to use this hard drive in anything besides a HP PC? Thanx in advance.

It could be Windows 98 does not have the proper drivers for the hdd.

possible also there is a partition in the drive that has some hp software in it. i've blown out a hp computer a # of times for corruption, viruses & whatever & re-installed win98se from my disk not their restore disk. has to bootup on a win98 boot disk, select no cdrom support, type fdisk, delete the partitions & make a new partition. restart the computer with bootdisk, select cdrom support, format the drive than start loading windows. but make certain to have all the drivers on disk as win98 does not have all drivers in its cd

How big is the drive you are trying to use fo Win98? Be aware that Windows 98 is set to read MAX 2 gig hard drives but, with a special program, is capable of reading a disk of max size 32 gigs (cant remember what it's called tho sorry)

How has the drive been formatted FAT32, NTFS etc....

hmmm, but you asked what is it .... not what does it stand for?

Or were you wanting me to write a paper on the different versions of dos and how much disc space each new version could make use of? All those votes of confidence going to your head maybe .... easy fella ... just a forum.

    ;)

Thanx for all the responses guys/gals. I'm not sure how big it is or how its formatted. He asked me the question and I figured I would post it here to get a better idea of what we are dealing with here.

I'm sure it' seither the no drivers on cd problem or the posible partition from HP. I will let him know to make sure to format it correctly and to look for the drivers for the hard drive. Thanx again.

BTW I'm always ready to learn something new everyday regardless if anyone thinks I'm a noob just because they knew something I didn't. Remember at one point in time everyone was a noob and still today if not knowing something is considered being noob them we will all die noobs for theres always something new everyday to be learned.
