Hi, i want to burn my .avi movies to a CD so i can play on my DVD player and watch it on my TV.

I've done this before and asked this before but i want a better option or method. I know SVCD is better than VCD, but if i convert a 700mb .avi movie to SVCD format, it'll be somewhere around 830mb+. How do i fit that on a single CD? Will overburn work?

Or is there any method that can fit a 700mb .avi file perfectly on a single disc while retaining good quality?

Should i use programs like ConvertXtoDVD to do this?

Try using the free version of Tmpgenc 2.5 and the KVCD templates,
which you can find on the web. I used them successfully about 3 years
ago and quite easily put 2 hours on a CD with good quality.

With SVCD, you are allowed close to 800MB since it uses CD mode 2.
You can try a program like VCDEasy to author the SVCD.

i couldn't find any KVCD templates. How do u make them? What program is really easy to use to convert .avi files to KVCD? And i don't like using TMPGENC or programs similar to it. I'm a noob at using programs with too many options, i just want a simple program like Nero that will just need me to click 3 or 4 times and i'm done. Or something easy to use without configuring too much.

KVCD is non standard vcd that allows you to cram in more minutes
by using a vbr mpeg 1. As far as I know, it only works with the
old Tmpgenc 2.5. This is the only way I know of to get a whole
movie to fit on one CD. If you want to try it I can email you
    the templates.

Since SVCD can also use variable bit rate, you may be able to squeeze
a few more minutes there also, but a whole movie on one CD may be
    pushing it.

Best bet is to upgrade to DVD and then you can use the more
modern tools such as DVD flick.

Not necessarily a waste - use dvd-rw ! Then when you're done, you can
    reuse it!

I'll gather up what I can (It's been a while) and send it to you with
some instructions. Don't forget, you'll need something like VCDEasy
    to author the CD

Here's the info - I could no longer find them on my system,
but you can get them from the web.
    http://www.kvcd.net/dvd-models.html
Download 352*240 (if NTSC) or 352*288 (if PAL).
Put the template in the Tmpgenc/template folder.
Open Tmpgenc, get to the main screen, and select the avi in "video source"
Hit "load" and select the KVCD template. Hit "Start"
After it's done, on the "stream type" (lower right), select
audio (ES) and hit "setting". Choose mpeg 1 audio layer 2,
sample rate 44100, channel mode stereo, bitrate 224. OK out and hit "Start"
After it's done select file/tools. Select simple multiplex and load
the video and audio from the two steps above.
Create the mpg. Verify that it plays in Windows media player (or similar)
Load the mpg into VCDEasy, author and burn
    the BIN/CUE to CD.

thx for the help and i don't have DVD-RW unfortunately.....besides, i just want to burn them permanently, so i can lend it to friends or just keep a collection of DVDs in a stack so i can watch it on my big screen TV instead of on my computer, otherwise there's no point for me to just burn it and watch it on TV.

and what do you mean by using VCDEasy to author it?? Do i just simply burn it? Or do i have to do something else to "author" it?

    Look here:
    http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page10.html
You'll find a link to the "last freeware version" of VCDEasy.

Install it - it's been a while since I looked at it - it's relatively
easy to figure out. Basically, you feed it the mpg, and it authors
it. By this, I mean it checks the stream for compatibility and errors,
and then it writes it out into the BIN/CUE CD image.
    Burn it with IMGBURN.
