about a week ago my computer was working fine and i went to do the typical updates. like an idiot i stopped the updates in midstream and ended up rebooting my computer without knowing that a certain winsrv.exe file was missing. to make a long story short, I reinstalled window's xp home. to my suprise some things, including my cdr stopped working. I have a couple year old computer so i don't have all the cd's that came with it. i tried reinstalling the driver's but it doesn't work. Basically i can put a cd in my cdr drive and it doesn't recognize it. i have a second cd drive that works fine. I try to burn cd's and it does not recognize that a cd is in the drive at all. if i put a music cd in there, the same thing. typically when you put a disc in your computer it will prompt you with a dialog box. not now. when i go into the device manager it shows that the device is working properly so i can't troubleshoot it. Can someone offer some kind of guidence because I've ran out of ideas..... thanks.
forgot to mention that the drive appears to work fine. the light does light up and the tray open and closes just as it should. the only problem is that when i insert a cd it doesn't even recognize anything has been put in..
A similar thing happened to me. I had a slight difference. Right after I re-installed XP Home, I installed CD Burner XP PRO and AutoStreamer (A freeware CD burner program and a Slipstream creator) I was able to use the CD/RW to create a Slipstreem XP Home SP2 disk. When my son tried to burn a music CD he got some error messages and then the computer stopped recognizing that there was a CD in the drive and would not write to it any more. I tried updating the firmware, but it either did not update or did not help (I'm not sure if the firmware update installed because there weren't any instructions with the file). I've tried the CD/RW in the another XP Home computer and got the same response, XP sees the drive, indicates everything is working but it will not read or write. I've tried online with http://forum.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=91&daysprune=-1&order=asc&sort=lastpost&pp=30&page=1 and found the firmware for the drive and http://us.lgservice.com/ but the 8400B does not come up with support and no one answered the phone (Sat 12/23). I'm sure their off for Christmas, I was going try and call next week. I if find a fix I will post the result. Please do the same.
