Does somebody know where I can find the most recent version of libavcodec.dll? Or an uncorrupted/flawless copy? I'm asking because, you see, whenever I navigate to a specific folder, containing some .wmv files, I get an error message saying Windows Explorer must close (probably because of the thumbnail-generation process). This means I can never do anything with those files anymore, possibly, unless I get some help. The more-info part of the error message says libavcodec.dll is at fault. [Stupid k-lite!] Any advice/info is appreciated. Thank you.
Thank you very much. Seems like a great little tool... But, if I disable the shell extension of libavcodec.dll, will it still do its job? (I like seeing thumbnails for the videos; that won't be disabled, will it? And, of course, then there's also the work it does with the codec pack, whatever that work is.) Thanks again!
Most common types, Windows itself handles. To be honest I didn't even know this program was associated with an extension, and was only going on your description... What package did you install that included libavcodec ? You could always try it, and undo it if you don't like the result. It shouldn't interfere with any of it's other functionality.
I got Shexview, but I can't find libavcodec.dll in its list. (I only tried its "Find" search function, because the extensions it shows are a few hundred; so, I didn't manually go through each of them.) This file is part of ffdshow, by the way. Thanks.
I've got ffdhsow installed. I'll take a look to see what happens when you turn on thumbnail for wmv. This is the first I've heard of this issue. What happens to the problem if you uninstall ffdshow ? On my XP system, the thumbnails show up for wmv as long as shmedia.dll was registered. Many of us unregistered this file because it would occasionally hang in explorer. Perhaps libavcodec is a red herring.
I've uninstalled ffdshow before, and then it worked. After that, I installed ffdshow again, and I haven't had any problems until now. (Well, occasionally, I moved some video files from one drive to the other and the thumbnails didn't refresh. I had to end explorer.exe and start it again to see the thumbnails again. But that doesn't bother me as much as explorer.exe restarting by itself with an error message.) However, you know, I can't just install, uninstall, install, uninstall, all the time... right?
Have you looked at or played with the settings in FFDSHOW to see if you can alleviate the problem. For example, in video configuration/ direct show control there is an area where you can set programs that can/cannot access FFDS; under codecs look for WMV related things and see if they're enabled. Try disabling them. Check codecs/raw video. Is it active? You could try uninstalling and reinstalling and choosing the option to set all settings back to default.
