Ok i have a laptop. and it has a cd/rw dvd player.

    heres the info.-

    HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4243N

it also says its working properly, but i know it does not.

so i was playing a game fine, then it all suddenly kept freezing and stopped working.....

now i can only watch dvd's, any cd's music, game, or anything else i try to see in there including burning a cd. it will be like theres no cd inside.

ive tried every single thing. exept downloading any updates which i seem no luck at finding, i tried uninstalling, and installing the drive again. nothing works. only i can watch dvd's is like it dosen't recognise any cd's.

i also deleted my windows home edition, and reinstalled it, and still not working. im running windows xp service pack 1. im not sure that changing it to service pack 2-3 will make any difference and havent tried that.

if theres any one that can help me please it will be very greatly appriciated. thanks again.

DVD drives use different lasers for CD and DVD, so it's possible the CD laser burned out. Or it could be something as simple as a speck of dust on the laser lens. You could try a lens cleaning disc, but it sounds more like the CD laser burned out.

If the drive spins up when a CD is inserted, then a lens cleaning disc should work. Nothing needs to be read off a lens cleaning disc, it just brushes off the lens while it spins up. But even if it does work, there is no guarantee that this will fix your problem. (If have some idea of what you're doing, you can take apart the drive and see if there is anything blocking the laser.)

If the CD laser is burned out, then it probably would be cheaper to buy a new drive then try to repair it.
