    Hello all!

I need some help with something. I have been trying to burn a couple of shows that I used to watch as a kid, but are not on or even on video anymore. I did find them online in .avi format. Now, what I did was I used winavi Video Converter to make the .avi file a .vob file for a DVD player. I then went into DVD-Lab Pro and I also tried one in DVD Architect 3.0. I made menues for the 3 programs and added the programs. I then burned a DVD (in both DVD lab and DVD Architect. Now my problem is, the one from DVD lab, will not play in my DVD player. it says bad disk. I did try another one in lab and it plays, but it skips. It will play perfict on the computers DVD player though. and the DVD player in the bedroom it plays a little better on. Doesn't skip as bad. The copy from Architect skips also in the DVD player. But, I have it playing in my playstation 2 right now, and so far has been running fine. So I tried another one there too. It plays a bit, then frezzes. What am I doing wrong or what is causing this and how can I rezolve this issue so that no matter what DVD player I goto, it will play perfict like a DVD from a store does? Any help is greatly apreaxiated! E-mail is the best way to get ahold of me, but if you feal this would be useful to others to know how to fix this, please send a copy to my e-mail also as well as here!

    Thanks

    John

This hints to a bad media or burn speed problem. What type of media are you using? Post the media code. Also, what speed are you burning at?

How do i post/find the media code? I asume when you ask what media I am using, you mean disk? If so, it is Memorex DVD+R 8x 4.7GB 120min. I am burning at 8x. I did try one disk at a slower burn, but it skiped too.

OK, and one more thing forgot to add in the reply I just posted. And this is a stupid question. I can't take the DVD that isn't playing right, put it into my computer, and copy it at a slower burn spead (if that is the problem) to make it work can I? I have to start from scratch? I know, stupid question.

Download something like DVD Decrypter. Open Decrypter and put your disc into the DVDRW drive. Go to mode=>ISO=>Write. This will give you the media code, but I am certain you got a cmc MAG disc. Those are bad news. If it turns out to be a cmc mag, then burn at 2x or even 1x. Try to take back your discs if you can. I have not done this, but others have and they will tell you a good reason to ell them if they ask.

When buying media the first thing to look for is "Made in Japan". Maxell, Sony, and Fuji have great discs made in Japan. If you cannot find those, you can buy Verbatim. However, the best thing you can do is get Taiyo Yuden (same as Sony & Fuji DVD+R 8x made in Japan). You can get these online somewhere like supermediastore.com. I do not shop online (luckily I have a source for Sony/Fuji Discs), but you will get the best advice from Afterdawn on where to go and what to buy.

Also Verbatim Datalife plus and some Ritek discs are good. I have tried Ritek R03 DVD+R 8x (labeled Dynex from Best Buy) and they were very good, but far from the quality of Taiyo Yuden.

There is a chance you can take the burned DVD and copy it again. You would probably have to use DVD Decrypter in File Mode. When ripping the disc, you may get read errors. To avoid taking forever to rip, set the read error retries to 0.

If there are few errors, then you will not have a problem. If there are a lot, you might as well begin the whole process again.

If you are successful in ripping, you can go ahead and burn it again at a slower speed.

ok, I downloaded DVD Decrypter and did like you said. Now you are talking about the spot that says Disc ID, right?

    Physical Format Information (ADIP):
    Disc ID: CMC MAG-E01-00

If so, then yes, it looks like it is CMC mag.

So, if the disk says I can burn at 8x, why isn't it working at 8x then and have to do 2x?

    Thanks again!

If I get say Maxell, Sony, or Fuji brand DVD+R, would I be able to burn at 8x then with no problem? Or less probelm then I have now?

Also, i want to try copying the DVD with DVD Decrypter to see what I get for a result from one of the bad DVD+R's. How exactly would I go about that since I am new to this program?

    Thanks!

First I will answer the media questions:

The discs do support 8x, which means your burner will write at 8x, but the disc's dye is not good enough to handle the faster write speed. You will get lots of errors and an unreadable disc (by a DVD player).

If you burn at a slower speed it seems that with all discs, you will get lower amount of errors. If you have the discs recommended, you can probably burn at 8x (heck some people burn 8x discs at 16x with no problems), but I would not go over 4x. You can probably have the same success at 6x though. Make sure the discs are made in Japan as there are some made in Taiwan by defferent manufacturers.

If you burn those discs at 8x, you will get probably 10% of the errors that the cmc discs got at 8x maybe even less.

I just successfully backed up a cmc mag disc which skipped badly using AnyDVD, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter, but I only used AnyDVD to remove the FBI Warning.

    Here is what to do:

Open DVD Decrypter. First thing to do is go to tools=>settings. Click "events" tab and uncheck the "check for program update". DVD Decrypter was shut down because it did such a good job at breaking copy protections. Next go to I/O tab and change "software read retries" to 0.

Click "OK" and you will be back to the main program. Go to Mode=>File or press Alt+M+F on your keyboard. Make sure your DVD is inserted into your DVD-ROM drive if you have one and select it from the drop menu. Give the program a few seconds to detect your disc and it will list a bunch of files on the right. press Ctrl+A on your keyboard to select all the files. Check your destination and make note of it so you can easily find it later. Now press the Decrypt button (the one with the DVD Disc pointing to a Hard Drive Icon).

After about 20 minutes you will have a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder. All you have to do is open your burning application that accepts these files and burn the DVD folders. I am only familiar with Nero, Roxio, and Ulead software, but Nero the most.

Just remember when you burn to set the speed lower than the max supported. 4x may be pushing it on bad media, so 2 or 2.4 should work better. Also, make sure once you begin burning that you just walk away from the computer. Do not touch anything and do not run any other programs.

I also have WinAVI, but I only used it once. The only thing I can tell you with this is to make sure your output is set to NTSC if you are in the US. After you select DVD and choose your files, click on advanced and check the output.

There is a chance that the original files have some glitches. Play them on your pc first and make sure they work fine. Also, make sure that none of the files are encoded upside down. This happens to me sometimes and those will not work when burned.
