I am trying to use different frequecies of sound to test something. What I need are frequencies that go lower and higher than human hearing as well as intervals inbetween. Im not a sound expert but know enough that special speakers may be needed to produce the sounds corectly. Is it possible to use the computer to produce the frequencies I desire? If so what sort of program should I be looking for? Are there sound bites of freqencies available for D/L? -Del
Because you are trying to do something very unusual you really needed to post way more of a description of what you are trying to do. Is this a human hearing test? You really need to use a very good set of ear phones/buds for the test. Computer speakers will not produce much of a frequency range. For human tests, ear buds are the way to go. You can buy ear buds that produce sub sonic and ultra sonic tones for under 25 USD. If you want to go above 22kHz or below 5 Hz you will need to buy very good speakers. I don't think anything goes below 4 Hz. The power needed to produce even a 4 Hz tone at any volume in a speaker is light dimming. Ear buds 'cheat' with the low tones.
I am trying to produe the sounds so they can be produced through external speakers. I need to be able to aim the sounds at something that more than likely has the ability to hear those ranges. So it is for an animal, not humans. -Del
That sounds most interesting. I still need to know more to help out more. You can PM me if you wish. You might want to look into hearing testers/sound generators. I do not know how far they will go into ultrasonic if at all. You will definitly require lossless sound bites if you really need to go untrasonic. I suspect sound generation will be the least of your problems. Humans stop hearing somewhere between 15 and 20 kHz. High fidelity speakers will go up to at least 22 kHz. You will not be able to rely on your ears to verify that things are working. You might need to record with an ultrasonic mic and graphically display the recordings to verify that your are producing the tones.
