Hi, I am posting on behalf of a friend who has just bought one of these combi units and wants to back up existing (mainly Disney) VHS tapes onto DVD.

I have a Liteon and upgrading the firmware was very straightforward but this seems a bit more complicated!

Does anyone know if we could do a similar thing with the firmware on the Funai or would he need to get a Digital Video Stabiliser like this one at http://www.cardman.co.uk/video.html ?

Any advice would be much appreciated

    Thanks for reading :)

Using a standalone VCR to a standalone DVD recorder, one would connect the 'Video out' from the VCR to the 'Video in' of the recorder.
If required to remove Macrovision, the 'Image Stabilizer' would be inserted between them.

None of the combination units (in North America)I have seen offer output from the VCR to the DVDR through external connectors - it's all done internally - thus the Macrovision applies - if the tape in fact has this protection.
    Not all of them do..

If the UK unit has a method of splitting the VCR output from the DVD
input, then it would be do-able.
I haven't heard of any firmware that can remove (analog video) Macrovision protection.

Thanks for that - I will check and see if they still have a separate VCR.

I think they thought that it would just be a simple matter of recording from one to the other. My Liteon was very simple to do - was hoping there might be something that easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info re connecting the 'Image stabiliser' I'm sure that will be useful.
    :)
