Yesterday I noticed my room starting to smell like something was burning, and I realized it was coming from my computer. I left it on a little and the smell got much stronger, so I shut off the computer before I went to bed.. i turned it on again today and the smell came back, so I opened up the computer and cleaned out any dust I could, and even changed the thermal paste just to be safe.. I turned on the computer, checked my temeperature, it was fine. I went onto windows and the computer just shut itself off. I tried to turn it back on and it just wouldn't go back on, I unplugged the power cable from the power supply and plugged it back in, I heard a very low sound, kind of like an electrical sound, and then the smell came back slightly. I kept trying to make it start, all I got was a green flash on the front led once or twice. Does this sound like my power supply died? or could something else have died or gone wrong?
with power supplies when they go they can take things to die with them lol, but b4 we get into that have u tried to clear the cmos? or hold down for 20secs 10secs to turn off 20secs to clear motherboard and c if that comes back to life, has ur mobo got an led on it to show when power is being suppiled?
mm, i don't know about a led on the motherboard, i kind of don't want to plug it back in if it can take my motherboard and junk with it. I have to pray that it didn't already take anything with it. i took out my power supply just now and noticed something was loose in it? like, if I turned the grill facing the floor, a green "spool" looking thing of metal wire would come and touch/stick out of the grill, but if I turned the grill facing up, it would disapear. lol. anyway, i'm just gunna play it safe and buy a new power supply if that's most likely the issue here.. anyone recommend any good (probably 450 and up or so, as the one i just had was 400 watt) power supplies, that, wont cost me too much? i already put so much money into this stupid thing, and I don't feel like spending a bundle just to find out my motherboard died.. I should have just got a dell but it's too late thanks

2sweet4u Try newegg.com as well if you are here in the US. Looking at your setup I would suggest at least a 500w just to have a little cushion.

Whatever wire you dont need just unplug them from the back of the psu. Which tidies up the case considerably. I actually bought my antec before I realized they made these. Now I regret it cause I got a "ball" of wires at the top of the case unused. So this is ya best best. Plus it has a good fan:> BTW Ebay is a great cheap place to find new computer parts.
I would go with the sp-500 (item# 2)it's got a little more power and it's cheaper,unless you've got a clear sided case and like blue lights. B.W.
I like that removable wire thing but the supply itself is 400 watt. I wanna go higher, as the one that just died on me was 400 watt. Thanks for the list, though. I guess I'll go with the cheaper 500, since I actually don't have a clear sided case. Thanks again.

Which basically means that you have a dedicated power line for the cpu and a dedicated line for the rom drive. Each line is a max of 18 amps giving yeah a total of 36 amps. ANd these are the removable wire "thingie"..aka modular. Nah I aint picking at yeah. Though it was cute how ya put it. :>
the supply came today, already.. new egg is very fast. but then, they don't ship very far from where I am. anyway, i plugged in the new supply (is it normal for the supply to make a little sparky noise when you plug in the power cable to the supply?) and ran the computer for only another few minutes before it shut off again.. making the same noise anytime i even tapped the power cable. i turned it back on, once again, shut itself off. so, i changed the socket and surge that i was originally using and, when i plugged it in to the new socket I heard the little sparky noise again, so it'd really help to know if that noise was normal. but so far it seems to be running without crashing.. also changed the power cable itself, so it couldn't have been a faulty cable.. anyway, that's a lot of typing just to ask if the sparking noise was normal when plugged in the power cable, but it was the whole point of this post
Thats normal. But what ya should do is plug the cable into the surge protector and the psu. Then turn on the surge protector. Which would elimate the noise. Yeah basically spiking the psu just a tiny bit. Which one did you go with?
the original 500 i chose, since it was cheapest that also had the removable wire feature. it seems to be working better in the new socket, though. the other one did burn out, since i opened it as saw the loose piece and huge burn mark underneath it, but it's possible that the socket caused the issue. thanks for the replies, everyone.
