Hello, I keep getting errors when I try to burn using Nero, and even other programs, but Nero is most descriptive. It all started after I was burning with RealOne and the comp locked up. Then i hit the reset button, and ever since I keep getting these errors, no matter what kind of CD-R i burn on. Im thinking my burner is dead, but some confirmation would be nice.

Here's the relevent part from the logfile:

    8:11:19 PM #21 CDR -1173 File Writer.cpp, Line 311

Sounds like something got corrupted when you reset. Often different burning software doesn't play well together. Another thing that can cause problems is if you don't have Autoplay disabled for your CD burner drive. Your burner software and some other application, like a CD music player fighting over the drive can jumble things up. See
http://www.annoyances.org/ for ways to turn off Autoplay(Tweak UI prolly being the easiest way.)

The 3 software things I would try to get your burner working again once you turn off Autoplay are:

    1) Get the Nero cleaner tool from Nero site to totally remove Nero from your system, then reinstall Nero.

    2) If 1) doesn't work then boot to Safe Mode and remove the CD burner from Device Manger and reboot to reinstall the CD burner driver.

    3) If 2) doesn't work do a System Restore using a restore point made before the reset you talked about(this may "uninstall" some programs or cause some files to "disappear" so I would try it last I guess.)

If none of the above fixes things up then it may be hardware, but I'd try the software fixes first. Most likely your registry settings got hosed. If you're running XP you can get a freeware called ERUNT to
save your Registry hives as part of system maintainence. Then if you need to restore registry settings you can do it without doing a System
Restore. Google search should find the download site for ERUNT.

I don't plan to use the system restore method, as the last restore point I made was a while ago. (Yes, bad me).

btw I haven't tried Nero 6.6.0.12 because every update I've tried after
6.6.0.3 hasn't worked! It might be worth a try to clean Nero off and install version 6.6.0.3. It works great for me!

I had an OEM version of NERO that came with my computer and I had a lot of problems. Then I ran across an upgrade on the NERO site and have had no problems since. Sorry, but I don't know what the update was. Browsing NERO might help.

I've reinstalled the drivers for the drive and reinstalled Nero but it has only solved half the problem. Windows XP's bundled burner works fine, but Nero 6.6.0.12 doesn't. Perhaps I should downgrade?

Downgraded to 6.3.0.3 and now it works fine. It's a shame that the best software on the market sucks so much.

    Hi there,

    1. Have you tryed burning without InCD activated ?

Nero InCD, Roxio DirectCD, Sonic DLA has cause some conflits for other people.

    2. Noticed you tryed to burn at 12x, are you successful burning at 2x or 4x (Try it at a lower speed)

    3. What media are you using, Brand and/or Media Code ?

    Latest Nero Version is v6.6.0.13
I would try that too, uninstalling Nero, running their General Cleaner (Removes all traces of Nero) and upgrading to the latest.

Did you install XP SP2 with Nero installed ?
Or you installed Nero after SP2 ?

I also noticed several people having issues with Nero after upgrading to XP SP2. They were suggested to uninstall, run the cleaner and reinstall fresh (After SP2) and it solved a lot of little problems...

Thank you for your reply. I'll try that the next time Nero dies on me. Right now Nero works, and I plan not to mess with it in the hope that it will continue. However, I am getting a new computer soon, and I will be loading Nero 6.6.0.13 on it. We shall see how it works.

Nero must've done something after 6603 because I just tried upgrading yet again without success. I put on 66013 and got the "Nero disappears if you drop a file on it from Explorer" error. Evidently they aren't testing it on any HP Pavillion machines. One of mine has XP SP1 the other XP SP 2 and on both Nero craps out as soon as you drop a file on
a compilation from Explorer. One would think this kind of error would show up early on in testing. Oh well, guess I'll just stay with 6603 until the bitter end. :)

I second that idea. I only install Nero Burning ROM anymore. I don't
even want InCD installed! If I need a temporary data CD I burn CDRW as
a data CDR. Way more reliable since you can nearly always read it back
even under a different OS such as Linux.

    @Elric667 -

    - your drive doesn't like that media, or is having probs with thr media

    - slow it down to say 4x

    - a-ha!. get rid of the packet writing software, doesn't play well with Nero, and Nero usually loses.

Also, run nero's info-tool, and it may be worth clicking on the aspi tab, looks like it's not installed -
    - get it here - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm

As to ASPI, i'm still not 100% whether it's needed in XP, no matter how many times i read up on it, i'm still none the wiser.

I've always installed it and it doesn't make things worse, plus i never read about installing it making problems so that's good enough for me.

Working with Plextor the problem was not the software the drive was having problems. It Failed the Hardware level Diags.

Thanks for the input lets see if I can brake the replacement drive.... again.

but you still got some stuff setup incorrectly..

I've read of the Plextor 716 being an abomination when first released, later to be sorted in firmware, but was the 712 rushed out to market in the same way ??

I'm not quite sure what your asking? In regards to the Plexy PX-712A dvd burner, it can rip all current audio cd protection(Including DocLock). Read and write Mt. Rainer, make a 1:1 backup Safedisc 4.0 (The Sims 2 University). Have yet to test SecuROM 4.87 and higher versions. Drive is expensive, but this drive isn't for everyone. :)
It gets the job done for me and I'm definatly going to buy the BenQ 1640 16x dvd burner. :)

i don't know enough about the Plex drives other than i've been reading the early 716 drives were dreadful, and firmware revs (a few of..) seemed to have made these drives ready for public consumption. (I know about this as i've been reading about the 2 guys who Plextore are trying to sue for writing their own tools for doing quality scans on Plex drives).

I was asking if the 712 drive suffered the same fate, ie rushed out to market without being properly tested, and therefore is the firmware out of date ?.

Plus Elric667,s logfile shows he still has problems that need addressing otherwise he will be back herre with more burning problems as swapping the drive is only part of the answer - according to his logfiles..

Firmware out of date for the Plexy 712? No, not at all. In fact the Plexy 716 model uses the same firmware as the Plexy 712(1.07). In regards to Plexy suing users who developed 3rd party scan software, I'm ashamed at Plextor and my next dvd burner [/b] will be a BenQ. [/b]
