Any help much appreciated with problems I'm having burning DVDs. I've frustratingly (and expensively) had to throw away about 20 DVD+R now. All details as follows.

    Nero Burning ROM: 6.6.1.4
    DVD-RW drive: Lite-on SOHW1693s
DVD-RW firmware: KC4B (most recent I could find)
    Media: Tesco DVD+R 4.7GB 8x

Doesn't seem to error when copying a few normal files. Had same problems before FirmWare upgrade. Higher % done before fails when at "6x" than with "Max Speed" setting. Errors every time I try to burn any AVI, MPEG etc. Not sure what else to try to eliminate potential issues and narrow down the problem.

The most recent Nero log below. Many thanks for any advice,

PS - As per advice in other threads, I've checked that the drive's set to DMA (via switching back to PIO, and then to DMA again). After reboot it remembered this setting.

Really sorry, having a dumb day.

I'm using NeroVision Express to burn these DVDs.

    Hello.

Edit out your serial number beginning 1A... at tis timestamp:

    [15:53:12] DVDEngine 1A...

Nero 6.6.1.4 is a lousy version. Uninstall it and run the Nero 6 Clean Tool.

    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/Nero_6_CleanTool.html

Download and install the following Nero 6.6.0.18 packages:

    Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

You're using very poor quality media. Try some Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and made in Japan labeled Sony and Fuji. Even Sony made in Taiwan is pretty good if your burner's firmware is up to date.

A much newer firmware, KS0B is available for your burner here:

    http://www.liteonit.com/DOWNLOADS/ODD/SOHW-1693S/firmware/DR16KS0B.zip

You have rhe Roxio CDRAL driver installed that can sometimes conflict with Nero. If you continue to have burn problems, uninstall any Roxio software like Easy Media Creator, etc. and run the Roxio Zapper:

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
    http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061

Slow your burn speed to 4X.

Just started the fix process. Uninstalled and "cleaned" Nero. Done the same with the Roxio-Zap software.

Now I'm trying to install recommended firmware, and get the below dialogue box?

    Error
    No matched drive detected !
This utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1963S drive

    Detected drives :
    (My normal DVD reader)
    1-0-1-0 S:LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1693S KC4B

I can only assume that I stupidly accepted an option when i put last firmware on, to update the hardware name. Maybe I can change it back somehow?

Nope, that firmware is the latest one for your drive, as the firmware you have it patched firmware. It is an alternative to KS0B, which provides better DVD+R burning, apparently.
So no need to update! :)

Have take all suggested actions but it unfortunately failed. Seemed to get a bit further this time however. Only thing I can guess is that I'm using crap media.

Would you mind taking another look at below log file (serial no x'd out this time!).

Many thanks again for your time.

Ripper is correct. KS0B is the latest official Liteon firmware. KC4B is an unofficial patched/hacked firmware that supposedly burns better and faster.

I retired my 1693 quite a while ago. I just couldn't get good quality burns with it no matter what I tried.

Keep us updated on your progress.

There is still an error with the interface Nero is running compared to version number. Did you follow all the steps I said? If so, do it again, but before you install it, run a program called CCLeaner (google it) and then Defrag your Harddrive (google for program). Now reinstall Nero.

Also, yes, you're using crappy media.

    Get back to us. :)

    This isn't correct.

Use the Nero Image Recorder as the target output device and create a Nero nrg image file. Check the size of the file. If the file size seems reasonable, try using ImgBurn to burn the nrg image file.

    http://www.imgburn.com

Just set the mode in ImgBurn to Write, select the nrg image file as the source and your burner as the destination and burn. Get some decent media and try burning it at 4X.

Did you run the Clean Tool before installing Nero 6.6.0.18?

If you continue to have problems generating the project, try ConvertXtoDVD:

Thanks again to both of you for your help - unfortunately I'm still having no joy - and contributing to more coasters in the house.

I have done everything as instructed: Uninstalled Nero, ran Nero Clean and the latest version of CCleaner, defrag'd all Hard Drives (C: where Nero's installed, G: is mass storage, and H: which I use for Nero's temp files), reinstalled the suggested Nero (6.6.0.18) + ~ Vision Express (3.1.0.21). I have also tried with Nero temp files pointing to G: instead of H:. All three of my drives have over 50GB free.

I've just tried using Nero CD-DVD Speed's "Create Data Disc" feature, which failed with the following error dialogue:

    Nero CD-DVD Speed
    Error!
    INVALID FIELD IN CDB (052400)

Is it possible that my entire batch of DVD-Rs is faulty?

Many thanks once again for all your help.

PS. Also just noticed in the status listing at the bottom of the "Nero CD-DVD Speed program, that prior to the previously stated error message is:

    Error - WRITE ERROR (030C00)

I have Google'd this, and the other error and found no useful information.

Well, as I said before, you're using very crappy media.

    Try some Verbatim disks.

I'm going to be a bloody expert as well after all this!

Just downloaded and ran DVD Identifier with blank media in the drive. Got below info on it's capabilities, and found out these DVDs (which are Tesco brand in the UK) are AML 002 made by "Advance Media Limited", and that the speeds are 1x-2.4x, 4x, 6x-8x. So you can add to your knowledge base that they're sh!te !

Giving up on this now until I get a chance to purchase some Verbatim media as recommended.

    Thanks again to everyone.

Just bought some Sony DVDRs (SONY16D1). Did a 4.5GB backup of stuff on my PC - took under 15 mins and worked a treat ... so you were all correct from the start.

    My only remaining question is...

Although this burn worked perfectly at 16X - I actually set Nero to burn at the available 6x which it seemed to ignore?

Is this a problem; i.e. is it going to reduce the longevity of the data and will it cause problems if I make DVD video burns?

I can't thank you all enough.

    Regards,

    Dom

You're probably OK but you do need to get Nero to burn at a slower speed for movie DVDs. I don't burn any faster than 8x for movies.

    Hi.

If burning took 15 minutes for 4.5GB, you weren't actually burning at 16X. 16X speed results in a 6-8 minute burn, depending on a variety of factors. 8X burns take 8-10 minutes, 6X burns take 10-12 minutes, and 4X burns take 14-15 minutes.

One can select a 16X burn speed and only obtain in actuality a 4X burn because that's the best speed the system can produce. The system will try 16X but if it cannot sustain that speed, it will slow to a speed it can maintain. However the system sometimes is not able to make this adjustment and a failed burn results.

I don't think burn speed will be much of a factor in your burner's lifespan. The number of burns is a factor though. Most burners become obsolete before they wear out in my experience.

Some burners with some media produce great quality burns at 16X; many do not however. Try various speeds with your media and use Nero's CD-DVD Speed Tool to assess the burn quality.
