I've been constantly getting the "Illegal Disc" error when backing up DVDs. I thought it was a problem with ripping the discs, but I have the files from a past DVD that I have burnt multiple times without any issues. Then I tried making another copy and I got that same error. I don't know if it's firmware, Nero's software, something in my computer's registry. I haven't posted many times, but I've read just about all so I'm not really a newbie but nor a pro because I don't totally understand the logs. I've copied my latest log just in case anybody can help me out here. I appreciate it all.

    Hi.

    Nero version: 6.3.1.19

This is a very old buggy version of Nero. I recommend upgrading to the most stable version of Nero 6, version 6.6.0.18. To do so, first write down your Nero Program Serial number and then download and run the Nero 6 Clean Tool:

    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Nero_6_CleanTool.html

Then download and install version 6.6.0.18 from this link (2 packages):

    Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

    Physical memory : 447MB (458092kB)
    Free physical memory: 79MB (81160kB)

A lot of your memory is in use. Be sure to close down any unnecessary user programs while you're burning and don't multitask.

    Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AM3

Thia is very poor quality media. Better media is made by Taiyo Yuden (available online), Verbatim, and Fuji and Sony media labeled as Made in Japan (usually by Taiyo Yuden).

I'm going to check on your burner firmware and will update this post accordingly. As of now, I suspect the out of date software and the poor quality media may be the biggest cause of your current problems.

    Edit: added

You seem to have a newer firmware than what Sony is offering at its support site. So either it is newer or they are going against convention in numbering firmware. :)

Make the other changes above and see what happens and we'll go from there.

    Hi thebrick
Your Nero could use an update - you're using Nero version: 6.3.1.19. Update to 6.6.0.18. Here's some links:
    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2 (recode & vision)
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

The last firmware I can find for your drive is BYX5. I can't find a BYZ1.
    http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru710adwn.htm
A lot of memory in use. Free some up - no multitasking and shut down any unnessecary programs.
Probably on the biggest culpits for burn failures. Switch to Verbatim or made in Japan only Fuji, Sony or Maxell.
Turn of booktyping/bitsetting. The -R discs do not support this.
Try those and lets us know how it goes - good, bad or otherwise.

editted to add: hey laddyboy ya bet me ;)

I've upgraded my firmware and I think that did the trick. I upgraded Nero but have had problems figuring it out, so I used CloneDVD and everything worked fine. The previous version of Nero I used was very user friendly, and this new one just annoyed me. I'm going to keep playing, but everything is good now. Thanks fellas.

    @thebrick
Glad to hear you are burning again.
What kind of problems did you have trying to figure it out the stuff in Nero 6.6.0.18?
Been while since I used a 6.3 version but I'm sure we can help w/ 6.6.0.18.

Thanks guys, but I'm all squared away. I wasn't understanding Nero Vision Express 3 but I actually went to 6.6.0.18 and took it down. I appreciate all your help guys. Keep doing your thing because Afterdawn Rocks!!!
