hi. having been successfully burning dvds for quite some time now with the combination of DVD shrink to rip (DVD decrypter if needed)and nero 6.0.0.20 to burn. i use either sony or maxell DVD+R to burn and have never had any media troubles ever. recently, i foolishly updated nero and all hell broke loose. now, get errors at end of burn with nero when using DVD+R, but it will burn successfully with DVD RW. i used nero 6 clean tool to remove nero completely, re-installed older version, and now nero burns, completes and says burn was success, but nothing on disc, or is unreadable. please advise

    thnx

    Hi there mark421
Could be a few different things so best bet is post that last Nero log. Just be sure to edit out the serial # - begins w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.
You can find them here: program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.

Anything else change pc wise (besides uninstall & reinstall of Nero)?

nothing else going on with pc other than recently trying imagburn(didnt like it and uninstalled), and as i said rolling back the nero to 6.0.0.20, then last night i read on this forum that 6.0.0.18 was more stable, so i uninstalled with clean tool and downloaded 6.0.0.18.

the nero history log is as follows:

Ok here's a few suggestions for you:

    Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4040B>Version: A106
You drive can use a firmware update - the latest is A114:
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1628

Your drive does fully recognize the discs but usually best to keep it up to to date.

Now those discs: Disc Manufacturer ID: CMC.MAG.
Not that best by far and maybe the cause for your PMA update failure & Session fixation error
From the log the burn fails towards the end - 14 mins after the burn started. This can be another sign of poorer quality media.
Better to use would be those Sony's (if 8x or under for this drive) or made in Japan Fuji or Verbatim (made in taiwan).

For this drive I would get no higher than 8x rated media since it's a bit older and a max burn speed of 4x.

Looks like this disc you used is the Maxell - for Maxell also only get the made in Japan ones. These are usually made by quality manufacturers.

    Physical memory : 494MB
    Free physical memory: 86MB
    Memory in use : 82

Lot of memory in use. No multitasking and close any unnecessary programs.

Give those a go & let us know!

Yes that would be the one. I'm guessing this drive came w/ the pc so it's an oem.
The firmware usually goes in a sequencial order.

    Keep us posted!

thank you. i've downloaded A114 w/no problems. having some unusual occurances now. updated nero 6 to most recent available version (6.6.1.4), successfully burned DVD file to DVD-RW disc (wont burn to DVD+R), and with burned dvd in drive, looked at D Drive folder and it is empty (no video or audio ts folder present), but burned dvd plays in home dvd player (wont play in pc drive). very strange. also tried burn4free (and had to download APSI??? drivers) with no luck. rolled back that download after i discovered that wasnt the prob (very nice program though i thought).

a work in progress for sure

just successfully burned dvd on nero with dvd+rw. pc finds burned file in D folder, no problem. question, why does nero 6 want to restart my pc after the successful burn? is there a setting somewhere i need to change? also, after restart, getting the "windows has recovered from a serious error" msg.

    thnx again,

When in the burning ROM in nero, there is a tick box in the bottom left.
Makre sure you have it "unitcked"!!

That should sort you out :)

Some apps in Nero have an option you can check to turn pc off when done.

For the pc resetting try this. Uninstall Nero. Run the Clean Tool . Reboot. Now run a registry cleaner like ccleaner. Use the cleaner and issues options.
Now reinstall Nero - use version 6.6.0.18. The version you are now using 6.6.1.4 'broke' the autoburn will Shrink.
    Package 1
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

    Package 2
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

For the media not playing in the drive or not being able to burn +R the media itself can be the problem. The Maxell's you are using are made by CMC - not good. Better to use would be Verbatim, Sony's you were (look for made in japan), Made in Japan only Fuji or Maxell (the Maxells you have are made in taiwan).

before i start these suggested processes, i am getting an error message at startup about missing system 32 file (a driver maybe), may be related to installation of apsi force files. this could also be causing a miscommunication between drive and pc

any further direction (remember, i'm somewhat of a novice w/computer speak), or follow through with your most recent post?

    thnx

Yes that missing dll could be a problem like you stated in the communication bit.

Which one does it say it's missing?

It may be the one Nero uses - if it is the above suggestions should clear it up.

Check here too. Go to NeroToolKit>InfoTool>ASPI tab. Check both in the drop down. Do any say corrupted? If it say system aspi not installed that's okay.

Same kind of problems but no solution.

I burned many dvd's (datas or images) without problems.

Now nothing works with DVD. I updated firmware, reinstalled nero, cleaned my pc and register, burn at 2x....
Not even speed measuring works. Nothing!
I'm going to give away this computer and I desperatly need a backup.
    Please help me.

    Hi matti74
    2 things I see:
You are using 16x media on an 8x drive - even though it good media and the firmware is up to date 16x media may give the drive a problem (Dell laptop?). Can also be the speed measurement is failing - the drive doesn't fully recognize this 'newer' media.

    Error reading data
Since this is in the log between the speed measurement started and failed I'm thinking it also has to do w/ the 16x media.

Try some 8x media like the Verbatim you are using or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.
Hopefully that we do the trick for you.

    You're welcome mark421:)

    Txs for the update too!

Half way there - but I think to get you burning +R again you'll need to buy new quality media by the tell tell signs in an above post.

Keep up on regular pc maintenance too - if you're not already - like disc cleanup, defrag, registry cleaner (good free one if needed ccleaner ). For ccleaner run the cleaner & issues options. The cleaner option does a better job imho than windows disc cleanup
And the antivirus and spyware scans.

i think we're all squared away now. have had successful burns today with DVD+R (the cheaper media - sony, maxell, using up the rest of my stock b4 getting the recommended ones i've read about here) at 2.4 speed. thnx again for the expertise. i know where to look when i have problems to fix.

also, love the ccleaner, what an awesome and simple program. works really well.

    That's good news mark421

Sony's are usually good stuff - used quite a few of the Sony made and Taiyo made ones w/o problems. The CMC (maxell's) are not always that compatible w/ drives and players even w/ up to date firmware. Then they have a tendency to degrade after some time.

Yeah I like ccleaner too - switched from paid app(s) to this one. Fast and does a good job.

Oh and no problem on the help! Stick around aD and help out (lots to learn here too!
