Do you have anything that might be keeping the program from running, like Zone Alarm or some other protection software?

    Nero 7 Ultra won't start.

I also have the same problem. StartSmart won't open nor will "Burning ROM" and "Recode", however "Nero Vision" will start.

I reinstalled Windows and Nero was again working but for some reason it stopped again. It must be software that I've installed.

    (Reinstalling Nero did not work)

Some software that's new that MAY be the cause:
    -Alcohol52%
-Avast (not likely Antivirus because it failed with McAfee last time)
    -VLC (latest Beta)
    -DVD Rebuilder Pro
    -DVDFabDecrypter

    Any ideas?

There was another thread here that said an incorrect serial number might cause problems such as yours. Check and make sure your serial number is correct.

I had the same problem with 7.5.9.0. I installed it. Everything ran fine. I turned off the computer, returned several hours later and the same Nero applications worked. I went to use Nero the next day and nothing would work. I've tried a couple of clean installs in the past couple of weeks, with the same result.

If one of you guys found a solution to this problem please post it.

    Solution:
Unfortunately, I ended up reinstalling Windows.

There are a couple things you can try:
    1) Uninstalling programs (make a list of what you uninstall; think of anything you may have installed recently)
    2) Do a System Restore rollback to before Nero failed (I don't really like System Restore)

The most important lesson I've learned is to use a backup program such as Acronis True Image Home v10. I now have two DVD+R's that have Windows plus every program tweaked to my heart's content. I save periodically any e-mail updates to another location but if I get a problem I can't solve I can use these discs to restore my Windows installation EXACTLY as it was (minus any changes done since then).

If you do restore, may I recommend the Seagate 320GB SATA drive (perpendicular technology). I got mine for just over $100CDN ($90US?) and the first 70GB or so is 80MB/s average read time. It's awesome! (Seagate model: ST3320620AS ). *Note: If you format this before using Windows, it might fail during Windows installation unless you choose the "write Zeros to all locatin" option on the Seagate Installation disc.

    Installing Windows:
    1) backup all e-mail and data (preferably to a DVD) and verify it
    2) Write down any important settings and passwords
    3) Write down the names of all your programs
    4) Make a list of all the drivers you need (especially your Motherboard drivers) and get copies of the NEWEST. Often the chipset manufacturers such as ATI, NVidia, etc have newer drivers than the manufacturer but ASUS, for example will be the only provider of utilities for your motherboard such as fan control, BIOS etc.
    5) Skim through your motherboard book
    6) If you can, erase all data by overwriting zeros, then partition it (recommend 30GB for C-drive for non-gamers and 60GB or more for gamers). Two or three partitions (C,D and E) are recommended.
    7) Note, when formatting for Windows, choose NTFS and do NOT use the quick format so Windows can check, and correct for, bad sectors
    8) Install Windows
    9) Install Motherboard drivers first. (i.e. NVidia from NVidia site and NOT the one's from the CD as they are likely out of date. Note, that most drivers and Utilities on motherboard installation CD's are usually out of date)
    10) Install remainder of drivers (Video card, audio card, Ethernet, Wireless ethernet, printer, scanner etc.)
    11) Install remainder of Utilities (Fan control/monitoring etc.)
    12) Check and install BIOS (only if needed. Read change log. Some changes may be "critical", some may be for the latest CPU. A general rule is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
    13) Log into Windows Update and get "Microsoft Update", then get ALL critical updates and most or all Optional updates (Note: it's easy to forget about the Optional updates which may be important.)
    14) Install a few programs such as your e-mail app or skip to the next step
    15) Install a backup utility such as Acronis True Image and make a backup. Label it. Eg. "Windows XP Pro SP2 (with utilities and Microsoft Updates but almost no programs)
    16) Do a FULL format if not done on any remainding partitions and do a full Backup of Windows to another partition (preferably another hard drive)
    17) I recommend unplugging your second drive, booting into Windows (just to ensure the correct drive), shutting down, then formatting your C-drive then TEST your True Image Restore discs. Alternatively, you can use a different drive to do this if you have one but it's important to use the same type (SATA or IDE) in most backup programs.
    18) Get back to where you where, then continue installing programs and restoring backup data. I recommend keeping most data in your "My Documents" folder.
    19) Set a reminder in Microsoft Outlook or somewhere else that automatically recurs every month or so telling you to do a backup of your "My Documents" folder. If you have other locations type in a simple checklist to follow.
    20) If you use Acronis True Image you may use the "Security Zone" option which hides the data. I recommend using a second hard drive if possible and doing occasional "Incremental" backups which can be used to restore to any point.
    21) Do a second DVD backup one you are 90% done.
    22) Do a third DVD backup in a month or so if you are quite happy.
    22) A note about backing up. I turn OFF System Restore (uncheck and resume it do delete System Restore data), clearing Internet caches and moving or deleting any data you don't need.
    23) Important settings:
    a) Ensure Cool 'n Quiet (or INTEL equivalent is working. Need the CPU drivers and Power Options sent to "Minimal Power Management" and verify with the appropriate AMD driver. I don't know the INTEL procedure.
    b) Ensure Fan Control is working via the Motherboard Utility (if you have it)
    c) Buy and install a better fan for your CPU is recommended
    d) Buy and install a good fan to blow across your hard drives (such as a Tri-speed 80mm fan set to the lowest setting or use a solution with a knob you can control. Google for a solution that can monitor the hard drive temperature but uninstall it when you are happy (i.e. 40degC or less) because this software prevents hard drives from shutting down at all as per Power Settings.
    e) Set your Screensaver to OFF or use a simple one (3D ones use power)
    f) Set your hard drives to shut off after a half an hour
    g) A UPS (Universal Power Supply) is a good idea. Pick one with VA at least double the Watt rating of your Power Supply. I have a 1000VA UPS and a 500W power supply. Test it's shutdown capabilities by pulling the cord out of the wall. Usually your monitor should be hooked up to receive UPS power.
    h) Finally, If you have XP, try to avoid buying Vista. Unfortunately, Microsoft is trying to force an upgrade via DirectX10, Hybrid hard drives and other Vista-only features. I have absolutely no intentions of upgrading until the OS after Vista or I may switch to LINUX when they finally get things rolling.

A little long, but it's worth printing off for future reference. I wrote this before and pasted it in for you in case you needed it.

Cheers, and good luck with Nero. Oh, don't forget to install the Nero Help files. Just download the single EXE file and run it and say YES to overwrite all the previous files which are just placeholders.

    Another solution:

I couldn't install Nero and I wasn't ready to reinstall Windows, so I, uh borrowed a copy of "NTI" which in my mind is the second-best solution and takes up a very small footprint (about 85MB) and can run happily with Nero also installed. I think NTI also has a 30-day trial: http://www.ntius.com/default.asp

About Nero. For some stupid reason, Nero uncompresses to a TEMP file on your C-drive when you install it. This TEMP files is not used except for upgrading Nero online. It's about 500MB.

If you don't want this, you can:
    1) Use Winrar to extract Nero to a folder
    2) Run "SetupX" the install Nero as per normal
    3) Delete the Nero folder now.

*Nero product update won't work, so just go in to it and turn it OFF. You can occasionally check the Nero site and then remove and reinstall Nero if there's an update you need. I just don't like wasting 500MB for no reason even if I have the space.

New Nero 7.5 appears to be doing some serial number check. Zone Alarm users should try blocking ALL Nero apps from accessing the internet and see if this solves the problem. Turn off automatic checking for updates. Also did you know Nero starts some Adobe files? I blocked this with ZA also, because I don't like this behind-the-scene stuff.
