    I have 2 PCs.
One has Nero 7 Ultra Edition(newly installed, trial, got from nero.com) The other has Nero 6.3.16

I have external Sony drive: Sony DRX-810UL
Brand new drive, works great, it burns 4x and 8X DVD-R fine.

I can NOT get this setup to burn my new Ritek DVD-R DL media. I've tried multiple discs. I tried both PCs. I move the DVD drive back and forth between the 2 machines.

    Details:
Nero 6.3.1.6 (P4 1.9GHZ, 512MB RAM,firewire) never starts the burn and it issues message:
"Sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disk..."
    Media requested: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R9 Double Layer
Media detected in drive: ML Disk" and it ejects the blank DVD.

Nero 7 (their latest demo version downloaded today) running on a different PC((P4 2.0GHz, 2 GB RAM,laptop,USB2) gets a little bit further, it seems like it will start the burn, but then the instant it starts to write, 1 second after it says "writing lead-out", I get "Burn process failed", and DVD ejects.

This problem happening on all blank media from this box.
Just got this spindle of 25 DVD-R DL(Double Layer) from www.supermediastore.com

BTW, I have a huge(18 months non-stop) amount of experience burning the regular DVD-R, both 4X and 8X; but this is my first time with DL discs and it has been nothing but frustration.

DVD drive: Sony DRX-810UL(100% new) firmware 1.0d
    Windows XP on each PC.

I am not positive if the issue is the media or Nero. Sony claims DVD-R and DVD+R support for DL media.

I do know that I can burn regular DVD-R (single layer) media 100% fine with this drive, using Nero, DVD Shrink, etc.

    Questions:
Does Nero 6.3.1.6 support DL media? DVD-R?
Does Nero 7 Ultra support DL media? DVD-R?
Does this Ritek DVD-R DL media work??? Anyone have an experience with this stuff?

I am stumped, hope someone can help.

    Thanks,
    Robert

also, i came upon your other thread in the dvd media forum where i have lent a helping hand, found here:

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/290334

like i mentioned before, don't listen to people that have absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE of what you are asking a question about... :) (in the above thread, not implying anyone from THIS thread here...these guys here DO KNOW what is up, can't say the same for the thread in the dvd media forums thread i linked you, unfortunately~ )

    Thanks for advice.

But....I already updated the Sony DVD burner to latest/greatest firmware at 2.0D.
I got this burner reatail from Amazon.

And, I can't burn using Nero 7 Ultra, which is latest/greatest from Nero.

Drive = physically fine. It burns 4X and 8X standard DVDs fine.
But, it seems to want nothing to do with these Ritek DVD-R DL disks.

    Question:
Do I need to do anything with the "booktype" I read about on here? DO I need to change that or any buried options in the software.

    I should note:
What I am trying to do is just create a DATA DVD. I just want to copy some folders and files(around 7GB worth) from the hard drive to the DVD. The main reason I bought some DL discs was not for movies; it was for storing a Sh****load of files on 1 disc.

    Thanks.

We can just go on what we read. From reading that you needed the firmware.

Booktype is for +r type media. You can give the option for write leadout for both layers but I dont think its going to help as you dont seem to be getting that far along in the burning.

I dont think you are going to like to hear this.
I have no faith in dl disk of any kind that is not verbatum.
The disk's you purchased are most likely the problem.

whew.... for a second there i thought the doc had banned me from his replies, til i read on...... whew :~P

    @rkj78h6g5...
like whompus says, try another DL dvd see if thats your problem... packing data to a dvd holds mass amounts of storage anyway..
may sound stupid... but why not just use 2 disks (if in the event, for some odd reason, your burner will not ever burn to DL media)..
anyway, i think you just need to try some other brands of media, some burners just dont play nice with other brands of media..

I'm very new to this board(well, havent used for a couple years, that is).
I'm a pretty advanced PC user, I edit registries, I even architect SANs and NAS equipment. But, I deal with disk and tape. Not much at all in the optical world. All I know is that 90% of my headaches through the years are from CD and DVD issues. Ha Ha.

Having said that, a lot of the DVD world kinda mystifies me, esp. all the cheap or crappy media, the incompatible formats, etc.

Is there a best place on this board where I can ask 2 questions and expect a real answer to these 2 questions:
    1. Who has used Ritek DVD-R DL discs, and if yes, which drive/software did you use? Success rate?
    2. Who has used a SONY 810(A or UL) DVD drive, and if yes, which exact DL media have you had success using with it? Brand, specs, where you got it?

    Thanks,
    Robert
