having this problem over and over again. reinstalled winxp and it went away for a while but it's back again.

After I reinstalled everything, both buffers stayed full and always had sucsessful burns. Now the used read buffer stays full but the recorder buffer never fills more than half, and the burn always fails.

II tried simulate and the buffer still doesn't fill, so I don't think it's the burner. I use sony dvd-r on 6x with an Aopen 16x burner. the funny thing is if I use dvd rw's it never fails either. I have 512 ram and only the crap that xp constantly runs is on, I shut everything else down and don't multitask either

    Here is 2 logs.

Check out this LINK to get your DMA turned on.

Your drive is not liking your media. You may try slowing the burn speed down from 6x to 4x and see if that helps. Otherwise try using different media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

Edit: How old is your burner and have you ever updated the firmware? I am thinking that the reason it worked for awhile after you reinstalled Windows is because everything was reset.(DMA On) Then for some reason you are getting enough I/O errors to default your IDE Controller to PIO. Double check your cables and firmware, if your drive is getting old it may be time to upgrade.

yip that did it, it works fine now.

I did some reading on the link you gave but stopped after the 4th page, hope you can give me a quick answer though, what would cause the errors for it to go into pio mode? and how do I set nero to go into anything less than 6x?

    Thanks a bunch

Here is one pretty good explanation. LINK.

As I asked in my previous post how old is your burner and have you tried to update the firmware? Also double check the cables just to be sure they haven't worked loose. Some older drives have problems reading or writing to the newer media, this can cause CRC errors which can lead to your controller reverting to PIO mode. Often firmware updates can remedy this problem.

30 read/write errors will make the hardware go into PIO mode. It's usually caused by damaged or crappy disks.
Occasionally a drive can have small niggling faults.. I have a philips drive which always powers up and insists there is a disk in when there isn't. Why is it always philips drives which get these mad faults?? Because during the process it tries to read the nonexistent disk it generates more than it's 30 read errors (nothing to read=read error.. haha) the stupid thing always needs the DMA setting refreshed.
Obviously an operating system which requires a reboot after changing DMA settings is hopeless with this lump of hardware.

As for these 16x disks.. I don't like them. They give me all kinds of problems with my "commercial activities" by coming back as "unknown disk" from many many standalone players.
Those sony disks you are using should be fine.. They are a decent brand but there is always the possibility of a bad spool. The log looks like your burner is having problems seeing the disks.
Firmware update may or may not have any effect. Cleaning the laser may do more for the overall read/burn reliablilty.
Hoard those 8x disks when you see them. I bought a few boxes on the cheap for my customers who have problems with the 16x disks.

I tried searching for firmware updates from the aopen site but as far as I can tell there were no updates. The model number of my drive is duw1616l-31 and it was manufactured in november 05.

And cables are tight, I unpluged and repluged them(is that a word? well it is now)

And this is my second bunch of sony dvdr's that gave me this problem. I think I'm going to try a different brand next time for the hell of it

"commercial activities" you shaddy, dude. I like that term, I gotta use that at work.
