I recently upgraded to Nero 7 ultra. I installed the first N7 version about 4 or 5 weeks ago.

It had a bug which caused a program crash whenever I exited Nero Vision.

So I downloaded (189 MB bloatware) V7.5.7.0 (the latest). When I installed it (upgrade), it worked fine (except the bug was still there). However, after some amount of time (less than 1 day) it began to fail to start up. When I click on the icon for any Nero app, the cursor flashes to an hourglass for one second, the desktop blinks, and nothing happens.

So I used the clean tool to remove everything, and re-installed from scratch. Again, at first it worked fine. I copied a couple of DVD's.
That was this morning. I left for a few hours, came back, and the "non starting" condition was back!!

I finally went to the "C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core" directory and double clicked on nero.exe and Burning Rom came up. So I looked at the icon in the menu, and it started nero.exe with the command line parameter "-ScParameter=8". I removed it, and Nero starts.

In fact, I removed this parameter from the icon for SmartStart, and now it starts, as well. However, it can't start any of the applications (anybody wanna bet this cmd line parameter is not involved?)

Does anyone know what " -ScParameter=8" means???

It took LOTS of work to uninstall, clean, and re-install.

I've been a Nero fan since early V5. I'm not sure I can hang with this crap.

Sorry, I don't know what the parameter does. You say you upgraded--did you use the clean tool on the version you upgraded from, like Nero 6?

There are a couple of different clean tools. One checks the registry and removes drivers, did you try that one?

Have you looked at your Windows Event Viewer to see if any errors are showing up?

Can you find a NeroHistory file to post? If so, take out your serial numbers, which may not be necessary if the last 4 numbers are Xed out.

    That's a funny thing - about the nerohistory.log file.
It doesn't seem to be updating that each time I burn.....

I'll look again later today. This morning I was aboe to use my new icon to start burning rom and copy a couple of DVD's successfully.

SmartStart is still not starting any Nero apps, though.

Well, I was hoping I would see some of Nero 6 left laying around that might be causing problems, but it doesn't appear to be.

The only error I see is that you don't seem to be able to convert the DVD +R to DVD-ROM. I know on my 3550, I had to use altered firmware for it to be able to do that. If you are using the normal firmware, you might check to see if you have a setting to not change the book type and see if the error goes away. The boot typing is mainly for older DVD players that need it, so unless you have one of those, it may not be necessary.

Otherwise, you appear to be running an Nvidia chipset. perhaps you need to update the drivers for that.

Did you find any errors in the Event Viewer that might help find the problem? If you had a problem once and still have it, perhaps some file has not been replaced that should have been and is causing problems. Is there any chance you have a bad file (audio or video) that Nero is trying to load and chokes on it. Hopefully you haven't tried to install any plug-ins for Nero 7, since it doesn't seem to use any.

I have the same problem, the programs menu or shortcut wont open nero startsmart. I fixed the problem by creating a new shortcut directly to Nero StartSmart.exe through C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Nero StartSmart and simply creating a new shortcut icon to the desktop or programs menu.
