DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER 4.0.1.6 BETA, is the newest release. If I am not mistaken uses the VSO burn engine. http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm
I use Nero 8 myself and have not experienced any compatibility issues, using Nero with DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER. You asked which do you recommend? You need both programs to backup DVD movies. DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER runs in the background. Use Nero RECODE. Or download DVDFAB PLATINUM 4.0.1.6 BETA, this program will backup your DVD's from start to finish. No other program is needed. http://www.dvdfab.com/download.htm 30 day free trial. Has complete, easy to understand tutorials. http://www.dvdfab.com/docs/ If you remove any of these programs, some file fragments will be left behind on your HDD. To remove Nero 8, there is a clean tool on their website. To remove DVDFAB, do this first in add/remove programs, Then search HDD and remove all other traces. Install your latest versions. This is a good tool from cleaning up your HDD. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/CCleaner.shtml
If you want to use free programs to backup your movies. Use DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER, DVD SHRINK, IMGBURN, in combination.

If your using another application to burn, select VSO. If your using Nero burning ROM, select Nero.
