nero 9 and converting file format

    I have nero 9; installed without problem. If I have a file in avi format,and want to burn it to a dvd that can be used on both computer DVD and dvd player, does Nero 9 convert it automatically,...or what must I do (or do I have to use another program to convert it to the dvd format and then burn in Nero?)? Still a bit ocnfused on all the intracies of this new program. Thanks
