Hi. I am having a problem with the buffer level in nero. When I burn(Pioneer DVR-108) something, the buffer level jumps from 30% to 70,80%. It wont stay high. I looked around and found this thread: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/271824 I went to device manager and went into IDE ATA/ATAPI controllors. I read in that thread that the dvd burner is usually the secondary IDE channel. However, my dvd burner is primary IDE channel. On the list, I have two primary IDE channels and one secondary IDE channel. For my first primary IDE channel properties, my Device0 has DMA if available and is currently in Ultra DMA Mode 5 and my Device1 in in DMA if available and is currently in Not applicable. I assume this is my regular cd-rom. For my second primary IDE channel properties, my Device0 has DMA if available and is currently in Ultra DMA Mode 2 and my Device1 in in DMA if available and is currently in PIO Mode. I assume this is my DVD burner. I was lucky once about a week ago and the unistalling the primary and secondary IDE channel steps worked. I was able to burn normally(with my buffer level high). However, now I cannot burn normally, even if I uninstall it again. I did not try to uninstall from the device manager through DVD/Cd-rom drives. I did not do this because I have two primary IDE channels. I don't know if this is bad or not. I have a media card reader. Maybe that is one of my IDE channels(I have no idea). If you need, I can post my Nero log. If having two primary IDE channels is not a problem, then I will try to uninstall through the dvd/cd-rom tab in device manager. I don't know if this helps, or is right, but my regual cd-rom has cable select selected and my dvd-burner has slave selected. Thanks in advance.

When I read you're first post I saw the buffer leval prob. and I thought "turn on DMA, simple enough" then I saw you're log...wow. That is the VERY first version of Nero 6, did you know think that they'd update? Current is 6.6.0.18. I'm a little uncertain about your firmware however, it might be this: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1898 Looks like 1.20 is the newest. This is your buffer problem. Turn it on, try this: http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/ it taht still doesn't turn is on then try this: ((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver “for Win XP users”)) A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES" B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER" C) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner’s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!! NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers” (A) left click on + sign of "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" (B) double left click on either Secondary or Primary IDE Channel (burner's driver are usually "Secondary Channel") (C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!! ***NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the above steps. CMC is one of the worst media Co. you can but from, you probably didnt' buy from them direct but they get around. Switch to something like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Sony fuji and Maxell are good if they are made in japan. Try 4x.
Okay. I downloaded the 1.20 firmware update. I extracted the files and I am unsure what to do now. I run the application and it says target not found. So... Also, I can follow the steps at burstcopy.com and do the dma thing. I just want to make sure that it is okay that my dvd burner is in my primary IDE channel and not secondary IDE channel. Also, is it okay that I have two primary IDE channels. The quality of the disks is something I will pay more attention to. Thanks for a reply.
I think primary channels is your HD, I'm not sure though, maybe someone will come and clear that up for you.
hi, just passed by and saw you'd posted your entire logfile. i've chopped all but the last log entry out to make the thread more easy to follow. whenever you dig around in the logfile, you can differentiate burn log entries within the logfile via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"
I've tried the steps to uninstall the dvd-rom from device manager, both from the IDE Channel list and from the Dvd/cd rom list. Still no change. In advanced settings of my burner, my Device 0 is not in Ultra DMA Mode 2. That is good. However, my Device 1 stays in PIO Mode even though the transfer mode is in DMA if available. I did not do the firmware thing yet because as far as I can tell, that will just make it region free. I am not worried about that. I simply want to fix the DMA/PIO problem. Thanks.
Hi there. I've found this thread because I'm having the same problem that addadict. But on my CD-RW (ASUS CRW-5232AS). First was the buffer level jumping to dif values. Then, after some forum checking, I've found that the same thing is happening here...DMA is off. The transfer mode is setted at: DMA if available. But the actual shows: PIO Mode. After trying all the 3 steps, still the same. And I got the last udpated firmware (1.03) for my recorder (pretty old though). I didnt install it, but it says so ( http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1736 ) Any ideas how can I turn DMA back on?
