    Hi markbaka
Who's the manufacturer of the laptop?
The firmware version on the burner looks like it's 2 years old so 16x media may give this drive w/ the older firmware - reason for the Illegal disc error.
If there is a newer one may help these discs but may need to check the laptops manufacturers site for it. Unless you want to try some patched firmware.

    CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
Turn DMA mode back on for the burner. Here's a guide:

the laptop is a packard bell, ive had a look but the latest firmware i can find is 4.24 (i am right to believe that mine is currently showing 4.6?).

ill give the uninstall re-install a try as when ive turned dma on in device manager nero infotool still shows it as being off

Yes your drive firmware is 4.60 - 4.24 is a little newer version that may help - looks like it's from 3/05.
I quick search and I can't find anything newer.

Device manager will probably also show this drive as being in PIO mode - so do the uninstall bit, reboot and let windows do it's thing.

ive reinstalled the device and the dma setting is now corrected according to infotool, i am still getting the same illegal disc message, i'm aware that there are two stickies at the top but i am unable to spot wihch would most likely be my problem from them

Your problem is more than likely a media/firmware issue. It's an 8x speed drive that hasn't had an update in awhile so the newer media like 16x may be hit or miss.

I have the same problem on my laptop (different drive) so I only use 8x media when I use it to burn. That may be your best bet getting some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim 8x media. Can be hard to find depending on where you are.

You can try the 4.24 firmware and see if it helps - if the drive is by some chance still under warranty this update may void it.

hi, thanks for all the advice, flashed it to 4.24, still not working, looks like it is a media issue! thats ten pounds down the drain!

    No problemo markbaka :)

Hang on to the discs - if you get a external or another drive for the laptop one day they'll probably work in it.

Check out this site for media (since you said pounds)
    http://svp.co.uk/

Maybe creaky will pop back in & give you some recommends on where to get some good 8x media.
