I have just backed up all my files to DVD using Nero, prior to having my computer restored to factory setting. Now I can't unlock the files...even Nero can't decode them! All my important data is stuck on the DVD and I can't open it. I can transfer all the files onto my PC but the file names have been compressed and even if I choose a program to open them with there is still no preview available. Anyone know how to unlock these files please?

Nero does not "encode" or encrypt files. How did you backup your files? Did you use BackItUp or any other backup program? If you used a backup program, you must restore the files using the same program.

Hi there...I used Back it up in Nero...the first time I have used Nero to back up my data. During the process Nero sais something like (file compression 8.3 you will be able to unlock later) those weren't the exact words but it was along those lines. After burning a DVD (about 3 Gb) I viewed the disc...my files were there with an odd icon that I had never seen before...but when I tried to open them it worked perfectly. Now that I have restored windows (and re-installed Nero) I can't open anything...the files are there but it looks like they've been compressed and I can't open them. Any ideas?

You did the backup with BackItUp, then you must restore the files with it. Open BackItUp and follow the instructions or read the Help. Sorry I cannot give specific advice, I have not used BakItUp. (To back up my data, I just burn the important files to multisession CD-R using Nero. This way I can restore them in any computer without any specific software. To backup the system partition, I use disk imaging programs).

Thankyou for your help my friend. I have eventually got my data back, but I had to employ a local computer firm to do it for me. It took them 3 hours to find a way of unlocking the data using 5 different versions of Nero. The moral of the story is DO NOT USE NERO BACK IT UP TO SAVE YOUR DATA. I have learned a very expensive lesson. Even with the same version of Nero that was used to compress the files...after windows has been restored...Nero can't unlock its own stuff. I have been advised to use Nero DATA instead as this does not compress the files and they can be read by any windows computer (even one that does not have Nero loaded). If anyone else is reading this...be warned! I double checked that the data had been saved before restoring my PC and it worked perfectly then...but not once it was restored.
