I have a new laptop with a Pioneer optical drive. It doesn't use Nero but it must be burning with some other software. DVD shrink tells me I need to use Nero but that usually comes with the DVD burner from what I've observed. I'm not sure if I can just install Nero over top of my current software.

I'm trying to make back up and I am rather stuck at this point.

Though I do not know what kind of DVD burning program you have, it should be able to burn iso image file, which DVD Shrink can create.

Since you are using DVD Shrink, I assume your intention is to back up DVD movie.
Please refer The Ultimate DVD backup resource thread.

I used DVD shrink to create video_ts file, then I burned that. It worked. I'll keep using this process

you can use dvd shrink to output target as iso/image files and then burn with Imgburn (free)
