Strange problem let me try to sort this out...
Nero doesn't see my friends DVD-ROM but it will see his DVD±R.
He had a OEM copy of Nero 6, he used for a while, ripping using DVD Shrink (w/AnyDVD) and Nero to burn. He couldn't get Nero to read directly off the disc to use recode. He can use that drive with DVD Decrypter, then open the file with recode to skip Shrink. But Nero won't read that drive, it always hangs up and causes a hard reset. So he uninstalls, runs clean tools, installs Nero 7. Same thing happens .
Nero tools see it, so I'm out of options.

Thanks for the reply. Back about a month ago when I started a similar thread, questioning this problem in his version 6.6.0.18, I had no responses.
I thought the same and done that already. I've scoured official Nero FAQ's but I think it might be a hardware/software conflict somewhere because this problem is not specific to his new ver.7. His ver.6 did the same.
All DMA's on, ASPI layer seemingly works (It sees the windows and the Nero), so I'm stumped.
I almost want to post this in the General PC problem forum, but I have to see my friend to get his exact model DVD-ROM (don't want to go in w/o info.)

Can you post a Nero log of your failed burn, might be able to pick something up through that.

Well, there is no log because when you try to read from that specific drive, the PC hangs up indefinately and needs reboot. If you read from the other drive it is fine. If the file is on the PC it recodes and copies fine. The drive works with other programs, just not Nero.

If you can post your LAST Nero log we might be able to find something, no problems.

I should be seeing him later today or tomorrow.
Warn you, any log I get will be of a completed burn (I know you still get system info from it), but I will try to oblige.

This version is buggy, try this one
    http://httpdl6.us.nero.com/software/nero7/Nero-7.0.1.4b_eng_no_yt.exe

try slowing burn to 4X, it does make a difference.

there is obviously a media conflict but I see you are using Sony Discs so it could be a firmware problem, at this stage my firmware source is "DOWN" and I cannot check.

I do agree with the help you've given, i originally had it set to that version of Nero, my friend must have updated it being impatient because recode didnt work right.
I can't control how fast he chooses to burn, although I can say when I have scanned his disk with Nero Tools it came out to 95% quality.
I do not understand how these tips for burning can help with recode ripping the disc from the DVD-ROM. Sorry, I can be slow sometimes.
After some more testing, I was able to use Nero Express with this drive to read to hard drive, but still recode won't read from it!!! So now I'm even more confused.

This is a little strange your free physical memory should read less than your total physical memory. Maybe you should try a memtest

I didn't see that to begin with. Are there any recommended programs, or ways to look in to this deeper? I helped him put his system together and I feel responsible for its well being. I appreciate all the help, does this configuration (from my log)
have anything to do with trying to read from the F: maybe a master/slave type thing? I've really run out of answers on the software side of things, my suspicions being that not only Nero 7 but Nero 6 also did this.

this is all correct, I just found it curious about the memory, don't know myself exactly what it means. It shows that 28% is in use, but why the total and free read the same is new to me.

    Mine reads

I do not really know either. I do know his machine runs smoothly, even though it was a store bought HP Pavilion, switched his primary HD out for a raptor, AMD 3800+ X2 and ATI graphics, came with Asus mobo it has never given any problems with anything except this.

I know this thread is dead by now, but had to mention that on a hunch, I switched his DVD-ROM (found out its a Phillips, rebadged BenQ which itself is odd that it didn't work like it should) to and old Lite-On DVD±R I had laying around and the problems magically disappeared. I knew it was something other than the Nero program!!! Thanks for the help anyways people.

I put in enough time building and sorting out his system, with no pay except for beers, that he better!!! Thinking about it, maybe that payment method is why it took so long to sort out............
Maybe I'll have to "invent" a problem so I can go back for free drinks. Thanks again.
