    Like almost everyone else in the Western Hemisphere, I recently got the 'illegal disk error' when trying to write to a DVD with NERO. Many replies to other people's posts have mentioned updating firmwware, getting a newer copy of NERO, using better quality DVDs... etc.

    It appears that Nero is rejecting 16x media for so reason.

    The only time I've gotten the illegal disk error is when I tried to use a new batch of 16x DVDs. I've used 8x DVDs with no problem at all, even the 'lower quality' Staples bulk DVDs (though I usually use Sony).

    One evening I backed up some files onto an 8x DVD, found I was running low, and opened up the new batch of 16x DVDs to back up a bunch of files for work. Almost immediately got the 'illegal disk' error. Right after backing up with no problem to a 8x DVD.
    Tried 5 more 16x DVDs got the same message, returned the DVDs to the store figuring they were all bad, did a Yahoo search and came up with this and other message boards talking about the illegal disk problem, and finally when I was looking at my burned DVDs I noticed they were all 8x. Went over to Staples, bought a 25 pack of 8x and they worked fine.

    I have an older burner (NED ND-3500A 16x DVD burner), it works fine and I'm not going to replace it, and even though the firmware version is older, the burner itself is supposed to work with 16x media, so I don't think I have to update the firmware either. I've also tried slowing down the burn speed, that has nothing to do with it, Nero still rejects the 16x media with 'illegal disk' error.

    What I do need is how to tell Nero to recognize 16x media and not reject it.

    here's the info from the latest illegal disk error;
