    HI
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with a Optiarc AD5540A DVD writer. Whenever I use Nero to burn data on any empty DVDs it gives me an Illegal disc error (this error started after I updated the firmaware). This is the error report - please help:

your drive is getting old..... it's a Sony NEC Optiarc burner:
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters...ame&hits=50&Search=Search#featuresandcomments
and you are using Disc Manufacturer: PRINCO - RGM1 DVD-R crappy media! Use better media.... Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim only! You just might have better luck when you also
uninstall any Roxio or Sonic burning software as this clashes with Nero!

and burning too slowly will cause problems as burning too fast:
    Burn process started at 2.4x (3,324 KB/s)
burn at half the rated speed of the media... if the disk is 16x then burn at 8x! but if your drive is having trouble recognizing the write strategy for the media being used it will go into it's generic burning speed. This is what I think happened with your burn! it set the burn speed to 2.4x! not good. use better media and you just might do better!

so in conclusion...... you have an old burner..... try using 8x media and burning at 4x!
where did you get your firmware update? I can't find a firmware update for your drive anywhere!

As suggested by IHoe, those discs are of poor quality, try the ones he recommended.
