I'm new to DVD burning etc. I can successfully use DVDSHRINK to compress & burn to blank DVD-R's that play on all my pc's, PS2 & dvd players in the home... so far so good!..... Again if I make further copies of these discs using NERO express to make "disc copy" again these are ok.....
Problem arises when I try later to burn a DVD using NERO & the backups put on my HD by previous DVDShrink projects. Using the various guides on this & other sites on the subject I'm having no success!...I'm wasting too many discs! Discs seem to burn ok with no error messages, ok but won't play back on anything but my PC!
I find it strange that NERO works ok using "disc copy" only!

    Using NERO 5 & verbatim dvd-r disc....

Note also that projects made with Sonic MyDVD burn ok & play back ok on all machines

What version of Nero 5? I had problems with a version of Nero I had installed - early to mid release of version 5.

Update to the very last version of 5 if you haven't ot try 6.

    luck-

I'm using nero version 5.5.10.52, it came bundled with the PC & OPTORITE burner, is this a problem?

That is a lot newer verson of 5 than I was using. The last update for 5 is 5.5.10.56.

Do you have the ASPI layer installed? It's available at Nero.com or Adaptec's site.

Have you tried not using Express? Just start Nero Burning Rom, select DVD-Video, New.

    luck-

You've lost me... what is the aspi layer?.... would this not have been installed when Nero was first installed, or is this a seperate application?

I have tried burning the dvd's from both express & Nero Burning Rom.

    Hi wsajc,

By the way, DVD Shrink cannot burn. Actually it uses either Nero or DVD Decrypter to do so.

What do your previous Shrink backups look like on your HD ? Are they .ISO files or are they folders with .IFO, .BUP and .VOB files inside ?

I use DVD shrink set to burn the discs using nero option. These discs play ok on all players. (Great!)

If I do a straight disc copy from working pre-authored disc to new blank dvd-r using nero / express this also works ok!

Problem is only later when I try to use nero to burn subsequent discs, using nero / nero express.... discs only play on PC!.
The files I am using to burn onto the DVD-R's are the "backup files" that dvd shrink planted on my HD, they are in the format "VIDEO_TS / *.IFO, *.BUP, *.vob, ETC, ....not iso files.

I think the underlying problem is that when nero is used directly (or express) to burn the files from my HD to DVD-r's it is formating the disc differently from those burned via dvd shrink?

Once again I have tried by using the instructions on the links on the above reply.... another 2 coasters!

Is there a tool available that lets me analyse the difference between the disc that works & the ones that don't ?

Note Nero infotool shows no diffences bar date!

wsajc, It is considered OK to backup your own DVD once BUT you are making copies of copies and then making even more copies from files on your HD. We don't want those type of posts here -

    Pete

BTW, In order to make a backup of a VIDEO_TS folder on your HD you S/B using Nero Classic (DVD Video) not Nero express -

The discs in question are movies & photo slideshows taken by myself & authored at a pro lab onto dvd. I own the copyright to the material. (I'm a "serious" amateur photographer, and help run photography courses & lectures.) I have am trying to put multiple lessons on to 1 dvd for convenience, rather that multiple discs to hand out to students & photo club members.

Hope this explains multiple copies issue.

    No worries,

I wish you well in your endeavors.

I spent many years competing in underwater photography (35mm).

I've also done professional videotaping and tons of amateur U/W video too - It sure was fun.

    Cheers,

    Pete
