I couldnt believe it either. Nero Recode for free!! I found it today at softpedia.com (if anyones wondering its a legitimate site) at this link - http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Rip-Other-Tools/Nero-Recode.shtml - I downloaded and isntalled it and it worked!Kinda. It had an error saying " Missing or Bad winaspi32.dll" and then asked to repair or replace it. So I hit the internet looking for the file I needed. A page at Nero's site was hosting a download of it but when I switched the downloaded wnaspi32.dll with the one in the Nero Recode install foler it still had that same error!? So I tried one other site - http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?wnaspi32 - and put this wnaspi32.dll file in the Nero Files folder
(c:/program files/Ahead/Nero Recode/Nero Files) made a shortcut from the Nero Recode Executable onto my desktop and the program started right up!!! I have a Nero OEM disc and they didnt include Recode. But yeah this is a 100% legitimate FREE Nero Recode program. If you decide to take me up on this but have problems with the wnaspi32.dll error I would be glad to help.

*I noticed that the uninstaller doesnt show up in the windows add/remove programs window. But if you use the tool CCleaner the uninstaller for Nero Recode shows up in it and successfully uninstalls.

I wonder how this is possible. I've never seen Recode for free but it downloads and installs just as you said. Odd but welcome :)

    Peainapod,

More complete instructions on how you put that new winaspi file in the Recode folder, please. Did you just copy and past the zipped winaspi file into the Recode install folder, and then update the Recode install?

    Thanks Much!

Thanks for noticing this thing about the 30 day trial Nephilim. Yeah I am not sure if it is a trial or not. I do see the window to enter a serial, but then again there wasnt like a pop-up window or anything asking for one or to continue a trial. I was very uncertain at first. But it worked. So i'll/we'll just have to keep our ons on the issue and post when something happens to the Recode installs.

    @Husker13,
assuming you downloaded the wnaspi32.dll file from the link I posted and you installed to the default directory during the windows installation then this is how you do it....

1.Click start and click on my computer
2.Click on the HD that Recode was installed to ( most likely C: Drive)
3.Double Click the "Program Files" folder
    4.Double Click the "Ahead" folder
5.Double Click the "Nero Recode" folder
    6.Double Click the "NeroFiles" folder
    7. Copy and paste the wnaspi32.dll file you downloaded into this folder
**If a window pops up asking you to replace the files select "Yes"

Is it me or does this version only encode to Nero's MPEG-4 format?

YEP! Downloaded the Recode today, and messed around with it. Loaded a Movie into VIDEO_TS folder, dragged them into the recode screen, hit Copy DVD to Nero Digital. In My Nero Recode 2 I Imported Titles etc. (See the New PDF How to Instrutions for precise info)After recoding I chose to burn it onto a CD, thats correct a "CD". It took a little while but My DVD player played the movie ( Only 1 hour for testing)All was "OK"
Next I'll experiment with other programs and longer movies. Got 2 1/2 hrs long for tonight.
    Enjoy

The more and more I look into this the less excited I get. At first I thought Nero/Ahead released a fully working Nero Recode version to the public. Now it has the possibilitie of being a trial version, possibly restricted to 1 video output format, and who knows what else. For anyone who trys this can you please post your results? thanks - PeaInAPod

I'm with you Pea. I installed it and was real excited because Recode is the only part of Nero that I like and would use but I don't want to buy the whole package just for Recode. I loaded several films in it and played around with the options but the only output format I could find was Nero Digital :(

Thanks Pea, for the updated procedure.

If anyone is interested, CompUsa is currently selling the retail version of Nero 7 Ultra Edition for 39.99 after rebates($40.00 instant, and $20.00 mail-in). I think only until May 13th?

Thanks to all who give their valuable time to help us Newbies!

Yeah I hear ya Nephilim. I havea OEM version that came with my DVD Burner but it disables the Nero Recode installation. So when I saw this I was pysched. And like you the only part of Nero I would really use is Recode. And the more and more i tinkered with it the more and more I realized what a horrible waste of bandwidth it was. Heck I posted this before I could try the software because I was so excited. If I had tried it out and realized all the problems with this "free" version I wouldnt have even bothered to post about it.

Heck, I probably would've been too excited to test before posting too.

Yeah if Nero/Softpedia.com is going to post this as a download of Nero Recode they should make it clearer the limitations built into this version they should make it clearer to the end-user. But alas I've become fed up with this cheap Nero Recode and uninstalled it. Too bad this wasnt a 100% working copy full functional like the retail. If that had been the case I have no doubt that it would have gone to the #1 spot on afterdawns most downloaded list.

One more comment...The "free" version downloaded and ran without any further tinkering, aside from the lack of features noted by the others I thought I might add that the only option for audio available is 2 channel stereo, though you are offered the online upgrade to Dolby Digital 5.1 for a $20.00 fee.

I think I'll be uninstalling this "freebie" as well.

What is the difference in terms of DVD Shrink and Nero Recode in terms of what it can do?

    DVD shrink is free.

    Isn't DVD shrink faster?

DVD Shrink isnt updated anymore, but that doesnt stop it from being a great program still. I get the story mixed up, but one of the designers of either DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter went on to work for Nero and made the Recode part of it. Old/not updated, but free, and useful, DVD Shrink is still the best free DVD copy tool out there. I have Recode, as i bought Nero 7, and it came with it. Sometimes Recode is faster with the movies than shrink, but not by much. The layout is different, but they do the same thing. I like DVD Shrink. I also use CloneDVD2, but it uses still shots of the movie as it is encoding and shrink has a constant, though, speeded up screen preview. Then end output is the same, but if you sit there watching the rip process (like i do most times) shrink rips are easier to watch. :)

Here I thought I was the only one who watched it... (Shrink ripping)LOL! Shrink,Decrypter,Anydvd and Clone dvd-2 have been all I've ever needed,I tried Recode just to satisfy my curiosity.

The man/woman who created DVD Shrink now works for Nero/Ahead and helped develop Nero Recode. And boxwrench is correct I did a uninstall, restart, install, restart, registry clean w/ CCleaner, restart and then didnt have the problem. Possibly faulty install. So that would eliminate the need for the wnaspi32.dll file i mentioned above.
The current DVD software I use for my backups is anyDVD,VOBlanker,1Click DVD Copy,DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter,DVD-Rebuilder(free),and ImgBurn. All guality and all but 2 are free!!
