    **Nero 6/Nero Recode 2/Windows XP**

    Hi Everyone.

Great forum. I have learned a lot in reading some of the previous posts.

My issue is currently with Nero Recode. When I am importing, during the initial analysis process I get the following error:

[bold]Nero Recode 2 encountered an error and cannot continue
Failed to read from the file VTS_01_1.VOB.
A semaphore timeout period has expired.
    [/bold]

This happens only with certain DVDs I am importing. I have success most of the time.

I see in other posts the gurus will ask me to post a log. my log file is empty in Program Files - Ahead - Nero - nerohistory.txt. When I first started troubleshooting, i cleared out the log files to get a baseline.

Any help is very much appreciated.

I've come across this on error on a few. To fix it I ran the files thru vobblanker. Here's a link:

Which movies does it happen on and what program did you rip with?

I am using Nero Recode and DVD43.

I did install AnyDVD and at least I have access to an AnyDVD snapshot:
    -------
Summary for drive D: (AnyDVD 5.9.4.1)
    Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

    Media is a Data DVD.
    Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Size of first Layer: 2084960 sectors (4072 MBytes)
Total size: 4169920 sectors (8144 MBytes)

Video DVD (or CD) label: CAPOTE
    Media is CSS protected!
    Video Standard: NTSC
    Media is locked to region(s): 1 3 4!

    Found & removed RCE protection!
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Found & removed structural copy protection (Arccos, Puppetlock)!
    Found & removed invalid VOBUs!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 3 bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

Wen I run Nero Recode with AnyDVD, I just hang on import, before the actual analysis.

I wonder if the size (8GB) has to do with it. This is by far the largest disc I have ever tried to rip.

Thanks for the help - will try that VoB link you showed me too.

I have the same problem with recode every so often. I just did with Capote. But AnyDVD and DVDDecrypter will get the files to hard drive and then Recode will do it's thing as usual. Decrypter is free. Sorry I lost the link. If binkie's still lurking she probably has it.

Size of the disc shouldn't matter.

Yep garmoon is right there are some Recode can't do with even with anydvd or dvd43. Usually the Sony ARccOS ones. Recode will error out or lock up. Glad you posted that is was Capote - doing that one as I type so I knew not to use Recode! I also use CloneDVD2 which can be download from slysoft also - nothing anydvd & clonedvd can't do that I've seen.
If you have AnyDVD I would dump DVD43 - they conflict and DVD43 (even if turned off) can conflict with dvd decrypter or dvdfab decrypter.
    Here's a link for decrypter:

Here's a link to use dvdfab decrypter, vobblanker and recode:

Thanks for all the help guys. I am new to this burning thing but have had a lot of success with DVD43 and Nero. I want to use other programs to become more versatile so i can burn anything.

I was wondering if you could give me a quick step by step using AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter and then Nero to burn.

    **Update**

    I tried:

    1. remove dvd43
    2. Make sure AnyDVD is running
    3. Start DVD Decrypt
    4. Trying File mode and ripping all files to my HD
    5. Recode with Nero??? (I am not sure what Nero function to use here).

I am currently on step 4.

Thanks again for the knowledge. Sounds like Dvd43 is gone for good.

    Correct thru #4

open recode and select either entire or movie only option, in new window click green + import DVD>search on the HDD where you told decrypter to put the files >open in recode and proceed to burn.

click next>click advanced analysis for better quality and burn at 4 or 8X; indicate number of copies and don't do an at-once burn till you practice this way. Click Burn happy burning.

Just finished and it worked great.

I did do the at-once burn and was successful with it... guess I got lucky.

Thank you all for showing me the ways of AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter.

Your help is very appreciated. :)

makes us feel good that we helped you, now you can return the favor to the next newbie with a problem that you know how to solve. BTW there are a lot of other options to use in getting to the same destination with these DVDs. You'll learn these too.
