I originally asked a question on this in the Newbie forum - but got no response, so I thought I'd try in here and add a few more details (so sorry for cross-posting, but maybe this is the more relevant place for the message). My original message relates to "Long Way Round - Disk 1" and was: ------------------------- "I can copy using Nero 6, and although my DVD player takes a while to load the burned copy, it will play. However the extra features just won't work (you can select an item off the sub-menu, but the disk spins for a while, then re-presents the menu again). The original disk was >7Gb so I recoded it to fit on a standard Fujifilm DVD-R. The default compression only knocked the quality down on the extra features slightly more than on the main film (around 50%), but the menus were really compressed (about 17% of their original size). Any idea whether I should increase the quality of the extra features, or the menus to get it to work - or is this not likely to make any difference?" ---------------------------- I've since tried reducing the space used on the disk to 4.3Gb and increasing the copying process to 'highest quality', and that makes the disk load much quicker. But I still can't access the extra features, nor can I get all the way through the last episode without the disk sticking. I've since tried using DVD+R (Verbatim), but I just get errors when I try to burn to them. Is it likely that these problems are because the disk I'm trying to copy is not in top-notch condition? Ta Jo

i've requested the moderators close the other post now this post is in the correct forum. Sounds to me like you've not done the menus correctly or the standalone player just doesn't like the disc, or both.. - those question marks aren't right. try installing latest 4.71 - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/aspi.cfm - can't find out if this is out of date or not, yet - wow - striped mirror - nice!. i don't think DMA is needed for Raid, not sure - you're burning too close to ouer edge of discs. see if you can find the target size setting to change this to 4300MB - i'd say try better media but you say you've tried some (Verbatim) - try burning at 4x
Creaky Thanks for the tips, will follow your advice - although I've no idea what that striped mirror thing is all about! ) I think I may have been doing something very, very stupid. I was using Nero Recode via the SmartStart (StartSmart?) application, and selecting the 'Copy main feature' rather than the 'Copy entire DVD' option. I went for this because the rollover comments make it appear that you have to use the 'Copy main feature' if you want to reduce the size to fit on a 4.7Gb disk. I'm going to smack my head off the nearest wall, then try another burn! Ta Jo
- okay, here's a quick overview - http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/R/RAID.html (sorry i'm a geek!) 'fraid i don't use recode, i use DVD Shrink for 99.9% of my movies. i make for what i don't know about certain Nero products by attacking the logfiles. I only have use for Nero Burning Rom you see. i use Shrink for shrinking my movies, then do simple dvd-video burns in Burning Rom. did a quick search though and this might help you - http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=483#483 ps don't forget to sort out the ASPI, target size to 4300MB and burn speed, from my previous reply...
I think A_shopper figured it out... LOL A_shopper, I'd probably go for DL media rather than 50% compression (greater now that you are going to copy entire DVD!). Personally, my max has been 60% (Star Wars movies with main movie only). The quality was great, but I wouldn't push my luck!!! Let us know what the compression turns out to be and the quality of that backup. I have Intervideo DVDCopy3 as well, but Recode2 is just as good in video quality and better overall with its options... Creaky: you ought to give Recode2 a whirl (especially since you can get the OEM Suite3, which includes it, for $8.00). I think you would like it. It's like Shrink2!!! LOL
