I recently purchased an hp media center.I use windows xp .i installed nero 7 and found when burning dvds that i would get a 1 second stutter during playback.i do not receive any message errors.i contacted hp and they tell me nero is not supported by this dvd burner(hp 840b) ,they did suggest a more recent firmware which i downloaded hi86 .this firmware was supposed to fix compatability with nero and sonic (sonic came with the pc).after trying hi86 i received the same problem.i then uninstalled nero and used sonic and get the same result.these are little 1 second stutter thats occur at various points during playback, they vary from 10 to 13 minutes apart.picture quality is fine ,audio is fine and burning cds is not an issue.just these frustrating 1 second stutters.i do have dvd decrytor and dvd shrink on my drive as well.i have since uninstalled sonic and have nero 7 installed and am still getting the same result.

Nero and Sonic are known to conflict with each other. Choose 1 or the other.

After choosing what 1 you want to use uninstall both and go to both websites and download clean tools that they offer to make sure all parts of the programs are uninstalled.(drivers, Regestry etc etc)

Once you do that then install whatever program you have decided to use.

Make sure you go to the websites and find and download the clean tools for each program.

    nero clean tool--- > http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Clean_Tools.html

Theres also a Roxio Zap utility that is supost to clean out Roxio program. Do a search for it.

Would you by any chance be talking about the layer break? When encoding to a DVD5 it should be removed. Some backup apps don't handle the layer break very well when recording DL. Just wondering if this may be what you're seeing and if so are you recording DVD5 or DL?

With Nero don't install InCD and with Sonic make sure any of it's apps aren't running in the background when trying to use Nero, and vice versa. Batch writing causes interference due to tying up the burner, but isn't known for 1 second hesitations.

thx for the reply.took your advis and uninstalled both and cleaned after uninstall.i then reinstalled nero and appear to have the same result.i am burning something that i ripped while i had both sonic and nero on my computer useing dvd shrink.is it possible the issue happened in the ripping even though i dont see it when watching the original during playback or are there any other suggestions.

The way you phrased it, I didn't catch it at first. You get the "stutters" throughout the playback of the backup at 10-13 minute intervals. That leaves out the layer break. That's a single occurrence.

Okay, I notice you get a clear playback. That means something is happening between the PC, the burned disc, and the player. Have you tried using a different brand of media and what are you using now? Use DVD Identifier (free) and post the info here.

Actually, I was wanting info on the media from DVD Identifier or another app. I was curious as to what you were using. Since Nero is involved you may want to get a mod, such as Creaky, to move the thread to the Nero section. You may get more help there. I won't be doing much more help here at AD, so someone else will need to take over helping you. I regret I wasn't more help in isolating the cause of your problem.

right, have had a quick scan thru the thread... Nero 6.x doesn't handle the layer break properly, not sure if Nero 7.x does, however let's have a look at a Nero logfile entry -

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

    no worries...

i chopped the serial number out and unfortunately realised the other burn entry with the Sony disc might have helped but i've deleted it now - oops. you could post again however for now i think there's enough to go on..

    - out if date, update to 7.0.8.2 from here - http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/nero7-up.php

    - still looking for firmware info but i believe this is a relatively new burner so firmware shouldn't be out of date

    - now they are subpar quality discs...

i don't know much about Sony discs, don't use them myself. this isn't too good in that log -
    - nearly all that gig of RAM was eaten up by something, you need sufficient memory prior to all burning..

    firmware update
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...softwareitem=dv-39047-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Sony is good, at least the 8X +R. #1 at digitalfaq. I've used a hundred or so with excellent results.

Follow Creaky's advice and update the software and update the firmware. Then try another project and post the Nero log if you still have the same problem. Remember to use good media.

Creaky knows his stuff, so listen to him.

@brobear - well spotted, yup, considering this -
in conjunction with your post, in this instance the buffer wanted 262MB of memory and was snubbed with only 131MB...

more memory needs to be freed up prior to all burns...

Does this about sum it up?
    1) Needs RAM (free it up or install more)
    2) Needs Software Update
    3) Needs Firmware Update
    4) Remember to use good media.

This might help with your Memory Error

    Solution:

You have a basic problem with your Windows swap file - it's to low. How much free disk space do you have on your hard disk?

    Try these two things:
    1. Reboot - can free up some space in your memory or swap file - you could have too much applications running at the same time.
    2. Add some swap space. How to do: right clic on desktop --> properties --> advanced --> performances --> advanced --> modify --> choose a memory size x1.5 than the RAM size (e.G i choose 512 for initial and 512 for max).
