I've been using Nero 7 successfully for some time. Absolutely the best thing I've been able to find, no problems.

Then suddenly I go to make a dvd and 'add video files' and it tells me:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    "Unable to insert C:\Documents and Settings\dave\My Documents\My Pictures\2005_10_08\8octmovies\MVI_0060.AVI."
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    No explanation.

These .avi files are 3minute (and shorter) clips from my Canon A520 with these specs:

    320x240, 15 f/s, 298 kbps, sound: 88kbps, 8bit, PCM.

If I want to play one I can click on it and Nero Showtime will play it, no problem.

I have previously made dvd's with them in Nero with no problem.

I can open a previous project - 'dvd2.nvc' for instance - and the files that were brough into that project are still listed there but when I go to 'edit movie' they'll be shown as 'audio sources' and no picture can be seen, only the audio track plays.

I have reinstalled Nero7. In fact I've got the Nero 6 and Nero 7 cleaners. I've uninstalled 7 and cleaned and installed 6 and uninstalled 6 and cleaned and reinstalled 7.

Back where I started because things didn't improve at any time during the journey.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this to happen?

I vaguely remember, I think, some talk about Nero problems with ASUS boards. And I've got an ASUS board. But nothing like that should be right considering all the success I had previous to this, using Nero in precisely this way, over a period of months.

No other programme seems worried about it at all.

As I said, Nero Showtime isn't worried.

And I can't understand - if it is a Nero problem - how it can persist after all that uninstalling and cleaning. (except that the 'cleaning' isn't as clean as they say - because fresh installs came back up with my serial number already inserted).

I'd sure like to hear about it if anyone's got any ideas.

I can't find a better way to make dvd's, and I've tried a fair few.

    regards,

    ab :)

ok..... first off are you using the stable version of Nero:
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?845

next...... the files from your camera.... did you change settings to the camera that changed the way it saves the files to AVI format that Nero might have trouble with?

next....... when I use the cleaning tools I do this:
    1. save serial #
    2. uninstall Nero by CONTROL PANEL/ ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
    3. then use Cleaning tools
    4. do registry clean up
    5. defrag hard drive
    6. reboot
    7. reinstall with Serial # (use stable version of Nero 7)

try again..... if you still have problems I'd say it's the file that is causing it.

    Thanks for your posting.

Yes, that's apparently the version of Nero that I'm using - comes down as Nero-7.0.8.2_eng_no_yt.exe, right?

Only difference between your cleaning and mine is you ran your registry cleaner and did a defrag. I guess I could try that out.

Can't be the file that's causing it.

    1. Look at the example error message I gave you. That's a file from October. Already enshrined in a dvd made by Nero.

    2. Nero Showtime (part of this Nero installation) has no trouble displaying the file.

    3. No other programme at all has any problem displaying these files.

    4. The 'old' files (like that one) are currently on dvd's made by Nero on this machine and I have the .nvc file for that dvd.

When I run that .nvc file it looks for those video files and finds them but thinks they are audio files. Whereas originally it did not! And the files (about a hundred of them) have not changed.

    regards,

    ab :)

Okay, no worries, thanks for trying. I'm currently in the process of using a workaround. I run the .avi files through virtual dub to get a different spec .avi and then put that through tmpg to get an mpg and Nero will accept it.

Life was much simpler when it just accepted the original .avi files.

And I'm very intrigued by whatever it could be. Is there any place you know of where we can find people with a deep understanding of Nero - like programmers, perhaps?

It is in Vision, I guess, seeing showtime works okay and things like the burner don't care. Perhaps some little switch somewhere, like the file associations in Windows, is telling Vision that .avi files are sound files.

    Very mysterious.

And even more mysterious that my reinstalls don't get rid of it.

    Thanks again...

    Here's another postscript:

I went to the 'product' button or whatever on Nero 7 and found myself being offered a search for updates available.

So I accepted that, thinking it just might be a fix.

Nero made me download over 50 megabytes.

Then it installed something. Can't swear to it now and I didn't take a note but I think it was installing exactly what I already had.

    Wow.... pretty impressive, eh?

So I gave it a try. No improvement. Exactly the same.

    There you go.... :)
