I've just upgraded my Nero installation to 6.6.0.18, I now find that DVD's burned with this new version will not play in my standalone (Pacific 1002), although they will play in my PC. I've tried burning previously ripped titles which burned OK with a previous version of Nero and these will not play in the standalone, whilst the original burns of these titles with the old Nero version still play OK. The problem is not media specific as it occurs with re-used DVD-RW and DVD+RW disks both of which have burned fine many times already.

I've burned 100's of DVDs of all kinds with many versions of Nero and I've never seen this problem before. I will uninstall Nero and reinstall an older version, but I will not be able to upgrade any more.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

I have not encountered this problem myself, but it's not surprising since Nero does make changes in their updates (e.g. shorter 'lead in' and 'lead out').

just in case it's something obvious... ...let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

OK Here's the Nero log, looks OK to me. I suppose now that Nero V7 is out there will probably be no more V6 updates, so if I uninstall 6.6.0.18 and reinstall 6.6.0.12 I won't really be missing out on much.
Of course if they carried this new "improvement" over into V7, I may be a little disappointed when I eventually make the big upgrade :0(

Your BenQ's firmware is out of date, it needs to update to the latest to increase burning performances and media compatibility. Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1905 and get the latest (B7W9).

Good choice of media -- Verbatim (made in singapore) is one of my top choice of media.

The reason why it won't play on some of your standalone dvd player is because some players can't play DVD+RW. To solve this problem, you'll need to "book type" it into DVD-ROM.

If you have the following set to "Automatic" then whenever you use Nero Recode 2, Nero Express or Nero Burning Rom to burn, all your backups will automatically set the book type to DVD-ROM. That is... if your DVD burner is capable of book typing.

((Here's how to Book Type using Nero Burning Rom))

    01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
    02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
    03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
    04) click on “Options," then on "Book Type Settings," set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every time when you burn using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL disc, Nero will “automatically” change the Book Type into a DVD-ROM format.

Good luck and have fun burning!!

You need to dump that InCD program/application. It won't do any good to you, except conflicts with Nero when burning. Go here http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/InCD_CleanTool.html and get "InCD's clean tool" to completely wipe it out from your system.

Alkohol, thanks for the list of things to tweak. I still think the problem is caused by the 6.6.0.18 upgrade as the specific Verb -RW's that are shown in the log have previously been burned on the BenQ with that firmware and with the standard booktype settings in Nero, and they have always been fine in the standalone. It was not until the "upgrade" that the problem started.

A bit worrying about those InCD drivers still being there, I thought I had removed InCD quite a while ago.

Well, I checked and booktype was already on auto, I also ran the InCD removal utility, the InCD drivers no longer appeared in the logfile, but problem still persisted. The drive firmware may be a little old, but it produced the pre-6.6.0.18 burns that still play wonderfully on the standalone.

I uninstalled Nero and then deleted the "Ahead" directory. After a reboot I installed Nero 6.6.0.1 then upgraded to 6.6.0.12, this was the version I was using very happily before the ill-fated 6.6.0.18 "upgrade".

    I still have the problem.

So, now my standalone will happily play a dvd movie on +RW that I burned before the 6.6.0.18 upgrade, but refuses to play the same movie burned from the same hard drive files using the same version of Nero on the same burner onto +RW's from the same batch as the ones that play OK.

    Eeek!

    Update.

I have now upgraded to Nero 7, the problem still exists. I have installed a new burner, a BenQ 1640, the problem still exists. I checked the booktype on the +RW disks, all DVD-ROM. I have tried the DVD+RWs in several standalone players, Pacific (2), Apex (2), Phillips (1), Toshiba (1) and JVC (1), disks burned before the 6.6.0.18 "upgrade" play fine, disks burned from the same hard drive files after the "upgrade" will not play on any player. A previously burned +RW that did play was reburned from the same original hard drive files with the Nero7/1640 set up, now the disk will not play on any player.

I am convinced that the Nero "upgrade" is responsible for this problem, I suspect that Nero has changed an OS file, as a complete uninstall and manual delete of all Nero files and registry entries followed by a reinstall of the old 6.6.0.12 software does not cure the problem. The problem also affected two different PCs with different makes of burner installed.

I have however, found a workaround, I discovered that with the new Nero7/BenQ1640 setup new Verb DVD-RWs WILL play on all of the standalones, but only if the disks are new and have not been previously burned with the 6.6.0.18 "upgrade".

So, I've switched from DVD+RW to DVD-RW and things are OK, but I'd still love to know the reason for this problem. Needless to say, I will be very wary of Nero "upgrades" in future.
