Hi I'm new to the world og dvd-burning so this might be a basic question of burning, but I just can't find any information on i anywhere.

I have several .avi files of about 350MB each, that I'm currently burning onto dvd's using NeroVision Ekspress DVD-video function, and letting nero decide which Video quality setting to use. With the automatic setting I can fit about 2 files on each disc which doesn't seem like alot, since the video and audio bitrate according to Gspot is about 1010/120 kb/s, with a resolution of 720x526.
Nero automatically choses Standard play (5073kb/s), but do I really need that high a quality setting, or can I lower it to one about the size of the avi files', to fit more files onto one disc?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
Before I waste any more discs.

Get some -RW or +RW disks and try the various quality settings and ascertain the quality level acceptable to you.

Thanks, but although the trial and error method might be a good idea, I was hoping for som more genereal guidelines. I meen the bitrate on the avi files is a lot lower than the encoding for the dvd, so is it really nessesary to use such a high quality or can i use a guality setting equal to the avi bitrate?

Personally, I would agree that there is little use to selecting the highest quality setting since you're dealing with lesser quality avi files to begin with. However different encoders do different things so without seeing what you're getting, it's hard to be specific in every case.

    A-H,

I note that you are converting 350Mb AVI files. Being familiar with what that means, I have done a lot of converting of these files to DVD format. I use VSO DivxToDVD to convert the Xvid.AVI file and it generally converts the files to approx 1Gb files. This will allow four 'Episodes' per DVD. You can burn using any authoring program, Nero will be ideal. The quality is fantastic given the size of the original file.
If four per disc isn't what you had in mind, then 'laddyboy's suggestion is definitely the go.

    Happy burning,

nerovision allows to customize the bitrate.put all the files you want in the program and when it asks you if you want to shrink say yes.right before you burn your project click on the button that says more and go to video options, then the dvd-video tab, select custom under quality setting and lower the bitrate until the "used space" bar drops below the limit line and turns blue.i would drop it down a little extra so you are not trying to burn to the edge. alot can be fit on a disc this way.

It is true that you can fit several files onto one disc if you reduce the bitrate, but I still don't know how much I can reduce it without compromising the quality of the file, given a bitrate of the avi files of about 1020 kb/s.
    Thanks anyway.
