I saw there was a thread on this about Nero 7, but I'm still getting the same problem with Nero 8 which I bought and installed yesterday. I checked, and there are no updates to it yet.
I'm running Nero Vision 5 on my Win XP Home computer. Trying to burn four .avi episodes of a tv series to a DVD. It hangs the whole computer while transcoding. Any ideas on what I can do to fix it?

Do the .avi's play OK before you tried to encode them? What are the specs of your PC, this is a fairly CPU intesive process and may just be too much load on your PC. Have you tried any other programs such as ConvertXtoDVD ($$$) or DVD Flick (FREE)?

Yes, the AVIs play just fine on my computer. What specs do you mean? The hard drive is 160GB, divided into C 58.5GB D 83.2GB & P 156GB. The videos are all on D drive and the Nero is installed on C drive. When I click on Properties for the computer, it shows "AMD Athlon XP 2600 2.08GHz, 992MB of RAM" I asked the IT guys at work for advice on what programme to get and they all said Nero 8 was the best for what I want to do. So having spent that money, I don't want to have to go out and get another programme that costs more, that works!

ok, but I still want to know how to fix Nero to make it do what I want. Do I need more HD space, or more RAM or what? If it's not going to work, I have to see if I can get my money back from the store!

Your problem is one of two things...

That is a fairly dated setup and it may just be bogging down or getting overloaded with this project. The second issue could be that Nero just doesn't like the data you are feeding it. I moved away from Nero a year and a half ago to freeware as it did as good a job for free and is well supported, the freeware replacement usually have a smaller footprint than the bloated Nero does as well. If it were me I'd get my money back if possible.

    Freeware alternatives to Nero.

    DVD Flick for encoding
    DVD Shrink for transcoding
Imgburn for burning (audio and video)

ok, so I downloaded DVDFlick, and tried to use it, and it hung my computer too... any other ideas? (Oh, and BTW, can you create spiffy menus with DVDFlick, like Nero has?)

The beta version of DVD Flick has some basic menu options that aren't bad, but you won't have the features found in the Nero menu creation.

So, now the avi hangs in both programs so it's either the file or the PC. I would try a different avi in both programs to rule out the program being at fault.

ok, tried that... no luck. Both Nero and DVDFlick hung the computer on different files.
I just checked the box for system requirements, and it looks to me like my computer has enough power to use Nero... but if you were getting a computer to do this sort of thing, how much RAM would you specify?

RAM is only part of the problem. Plus it depends on if you run XP or Vista.

In your case you MIGHT be able to just upgrade the processor to something newer, and get by.

However if your looking for a new PC I'd look for soemthing with a Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and 2-4GB of RAM. Of course then your graphics card comes into play to..but you get the idea.

Nero 8 hung for me to, so i went back to Nero 7. Nero 8 doesnt really offer anything new that I need.

Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6 is also a great app! Very much like Nero in terms of menu making.
