Ok, I still don't know what the problem was, but I got round it by using the guide on this site at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/272946 which suggests using Nero Vision in conjunction with Nero burning Rom. I've found this works, but only if I burn as DVD-ROM (ISO) & not DVD-Video. When I burn as DVD-Video I get playback problems, specifically that it won't playback, takes ages to read dvd from computer & comes up with an error message "Sorry, the folder you have selected does not contain a valid DVD-Video, SVCD or VCD structure. Please use the 'Media Files' function to browse and play files from this folder." or "Unable to read part of a file on the DVD. Playback may be affected." Fair enough I'll do it as DVD-ROM (ISO) is future but when I do this method I have problems in selecting the .vob, .ifo, .bup files. I get an error message saying "you have added dvd-video content to a compilation type that will not result in a dvd-video compliant disc. To create discs playable in standalone dvd-video players, please use the dvd-video compilation type." But of course when I do this the resulting dvd won't play on my computer. Can anyone explain this to me & suggest how I can resolve this & create a disc that can be viewed on my computer & a dvd player. Thanks
I've been reading a few of the posts in this forum, as no one has bothered to answer any of my questions on this thread, and it looks to me like it may be an issue with firmware. I'm going to look about for a firmware update, meantime can anyone offer any advice so I don't waste more disks on trial and error. Thanks
Hey Betadog, Jaknife here, following up on your reference to this thread. What exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to copy and burn a store bought DVD? If so I may be able to help. I do it all the time. My trouble on my thread is the first I've had, downloaded video from WALL E.com, converted to vob files, burned, and u know the rest - only plays on computer, not standalone. Let me know. BTW, I may have learned something from your thread, will let you know what it does for me, may be of use to you. Later.
Hi Jaknife, I'm just trying to put avi files onto a dvd format, though I've had the same problem - computer not reading burned dvd - when trying to copy a commercial dvd. Glad to hear my comments might've been of use, at least someone should get some benefit. I've been looking to update the firmware for my dvd drive (Slimline DVDRW SSM-8515S version GRS2-HA1 TAO - 8.3.2.1) but I find that the manufacturers firmware doesn't apply as mine is OEM & can't be updated (apart from possibly from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=5BJADPNO but this is just a bin file & I don't know what to do with it.
BETADOG - Is it possible that the TAO function is causing a glitch in playback? I'm wondering if disabling this feature may be the solution, so the burn is one continuous one instead of start-and-stop. If not, then only other thought I have is first convert avi files to another format, then to DVD format, then burn. Ya never know what you'll learn through trial and error - I've figured out tons of stuff, along with help in here. Let me know.
It could be that, I hadn't heard of TAO before, apart from the Chinese Tao. I've just searched for TAO or track at once in the NERO manuals but can't see much said on the Nero Burning ROM one, where should I be looking & how would I disable it & I'll give it a try? I don't think the problem is in the fact that I'm convering avi files, as I've had the same issue with trying to copy a commercial dvd. Thanks
Have you ever successfully copied and burned a commercial DVD? If not, I'll let you know my procedures and software I use, it's all freeware. I borrow DVD's from the library regularly and copy/burn, scan the cover inserts, make disc labels. Only ones that can be a problem are some Disney releases, then I use a particular program. Glad to share, let me know. I didn't get a chance to try a different burn attempt last night, still need to check my NTSC/PAL Nero settings to confirm/figure out why my burned discs only play in computer, not standalone players, whatever I learn that may pertain to your similar problem I'll let you know. Later...
Jaknife, no the first dvd that I actually tried to copy was the other week & it can't be read by the computer. Glad to hear your processes, it may put me on the right track.
No problem. First, download freeware DVD43, DVD Shrink 3.2, VobBlanker, and DVDFab 5. A little surfing will find them, don't pay for them. I think I got them all through the various chats and links here in afterdawn. If you have trouble let me know and I'll rustle up the links and post them here for you. When you insert a commercial DVD into your player, DVD43 breaks the security protections automatically, no need to open it or anything. DVD Shrink is used to open the DVD and let you reauthor it, editing out anything you don't want including other languages, then shrinks it to fit on a standard single layer DVD. You'll save these newly organized files to a new temp folder you create, I just put it on my desktop. Once that's done you're ready to burn, I use Nero 6 to burn my VOB files, seems the most glitch free and easy to use for me, does the job every time. I use DVDFab 5 instead of DVD Shrink when it's a problem Disney DVD or any other that seems to have more "unbreakable" protection. VobBlanker I use when I really want to go nuts reauthoring, but it's a bear to learn, lots of experimentation, but yields good results. If all you want is the main movie, and some extras, trailers, outtakes, stuff like that, then DVD Shrink will do the job nicely. Incidentally, I use DVD Shrink after I use DVDFab 5 to reauthor anyway, Fab just seems to be able to break protections when Shrink won't work - with some DVD's it wants to close, won't work, whatever, not until I first run it through Fab. If you need tutorials on any of these you should also be able to find them among the various threads for each here in afterdawn. I'll work with you until you can tell me you've made your first DVD copy that plays in both your computer and any standalone player - that's the goal. If you get going on this and run into problems just let me now, I'm sure I may have left out a crucial step or two, but you'll learn. I did! Later...
Betadog - any luck? I had some other thoughts but will wait to hear if you've been successful with what I've explained so far. One thing I've been experiencing lately is that I almost always must first use DVDFab5 to initially save the DVD files to my computer, then use DVD Shrink to re-author and eliminate unwanted items, FBI warnings, languages, then burn VOB files to new DVD with Nero. I'll check back regularly to see how you're doing. Later...
Jaknife, Haven't had the chance to try to do anything on this as I've been having connection problems, now resolved hopefully. Thanks for the advice & list of programs, I'll get ahold of them and try them out at some point, though I don't copy many dvds but mainly just burn downloads so I'm trying to get this issue resolved before I deal with setting up to burn copies of commercial dvds. I want to try to clear my hardrive a bit before I download new software, as nero was intended to be a bit of a one stop shop in any case but I'll let you know how it goes once I've managed to burn some of the files on my harddrive & clear some space.
