Hope someone can help out here. I’ve gotten to a point where I can’t get Nero to burn anything after Shrink runs through its processing. I got rid of the newer Nero version and downloaded 6, 6, 0, 18 and made sure not to let it auto-update which worked out fine for about a week …now it wont burn anything and just brings up the error (below) When I was running the newer version of Nero , I’d run into this error every once in awhile …and the way I was able to work around it was after ripping with AnyDvd , I’d run it through VobBlanker then Shrink/nero would burn it with no errors. Now nothing works… Here’s the error I’m getting …hoping someone who understands this goobly-gook can decipher it and tell me what I should do. Hi busnutz A power calibration error can be caused by the media and/or firmware not up to date. Your using good media - Taiyo Yuden. But the firmware can use an update. The latest is 1.02 Give that a go and let us know.

[bold]The media you're using is great stuff (taiyo yuden 16x DVD-Rs) and the burner should have no problem with it.[/bold] It's possible you got a bad batch of disks, does it happen with every one or not with all of them? The firmware update should/may resolve this issue if it's a problem with recognizing the media, but if it doesn't, you could try another brand of disks and see what happens (try verbatim). If you're still getting the same error every time, no matter what, try cleaning the burner's lens (it may be dirty) by blowing some air in it with the tray opened or using a cleaning disk. If the problem won't go away, it's possible that the burner may be defective and you'll need to replace it with a new one. Taiyo Yuden 16X TG03's aren't great stuff, many have reported marginal burns and poor player compatibly. I have used the 8X TG02's with good results, unfortunatly I got TG03's this time and I'm not pleased. I cannot burn them at their rated speed and my older Sampo player doesn't like them. Never again, for 16X burns it's back to Verbatim for me.
Who hasn't noted the power calibration error? update firmware and make sure the optical head is clean. Then make sure the recordable disc doesn't have any big fingerprints or smudges on it and give it another try. An older drive with a failing laser can cause the problem as well. If the same problem happens when you've done everything, try using another burner if you have one or can borrow one. Make sure it works and then install it in your PC where the drive isn't working and see if it works.
@Pacman777, I am in COMPLETE agreeance with you on this one I cannot understand some peoples logic by burning at high speed.
Thanks everyone for the help here…..really appreciate it . I’m a terrible ‘Backup’ Addict so I’ve been in serious withdrawals not being able to make this work. I upgraded the firmware, and tried using a different media but no go…. Then just in case this was a Nero problem I tried burning through Imgburn and still no go … Then I used our DVD lens cleaner … And I’m happy to report that seemed to be the problem. Just completed a burn with no errors. Here’s something I’m wondering about … I have a Sony External DVD recorder (firewire) …how do you feel about using an external drive for backups ? Okay as long as they work. Some software and external drives don't play well together. Most do, but the occasional "won't" can make a user crazy. Part of the problem is with the slower interface with the external drives. MysticE I have a Plex and some other burners. As I mentioned, there may be no problem with burning at the rated speed, but I prefer 6X. I use Sony +R (manufactured by TY or Sony) all the time. I can't remember the last time I got a coaster. So I think TY is good media, along with a lot of other users. There's always somebody doing a test somewhere. I don't give CDFreaks any more credit than I do some other forums. The point was that there are fewer errors at a lower speed, if errors do happen to start showing up with a particular batch of media or drive. I don't care what speed people burn at. Just have the good sense to slow it down if errors creep in with the knowledge that errors happen more at high speeds. From what I've seen here at AD, most of the experienced members who do video copying burn at the lower speeds, usually 8X and below. I don't hold to the 1/2 of max standard, I go 6X on 8X media and 1/3 on 18X. My recommendation is use what works and is comfortable for the user. That varies by user due to hardware and media, which makes the slower speed safer for all. Plus burning at higher speeds doesn't save that much time. I'll go with safe over fast, it's cheaper (fewer coasters). I found the inclusion of CMC 18X -R in the good grouping from CDFreaks interesting. That is the manufacturer that destroyed Memorex's reputation by supplying horrible media. Not long ago you had trouble giving the stuff away and it was avoided like the plague. There was trouble writing to it, even at the lowest speeds it wouldn't work every time. I got stuck with a batch and got all kinds of coasters. Does this mean it's safe to use Memorex again and I won't be seeing Memosux all the time? Verbatim is usually a good brand, but who made your batch this time? I've bought them and noticed different manufacturers. I've also noticed it's manufactured in different countries, which means different facilities and even different manufacturers who also produce media for other brands. Like the Sonys I use, the only difference between them and some other brands is the label. I have a habit of identifying my media when I get a new batch so I know what I'm using. DVD Identifier is a handy tool for that. I use DVDInfo, it has utilities included. You'll find Verbatim isn't a manufacturer, but a brand name. They do have a manufacturer but they also sell media that is made by other companies, who in turn make media for other brands.
I forgot, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC) is the in house Verbatim. In the past CMC (and others) has made DVDs for Verbatim. CMC had made DVDs for a bunch of brands. I don't know why Memorex got singled out unless they were selling more of it.
